Good deal for th Knicks. The general consensus on RealGM is that they gave up too much. I don't get it...

It doesn't improve their standing in the East. They are still going to be a the 5th best team at best.

Did you not get the memo?

Gallo is a 6'10" Larry Bird.

Some Knicks fans, yea, but even from other team's fans who wouldn't think to overrate Gallo that much think the Knicks are a joke.

Something doesn't compute.

For this year, maybe. Once they get a chance to recoup some depth through FA, they will rise in the standings. That is assuming they make the right moves. They could blow it still at this point, but if they don't improve next season and into the future it won't be because of this trade.

I don't like it for the Knicks because they could've had Melo in the offseason for nothing but $. I mean, was he REALLY going to sign an extension in Denver?

Now they've given up a couple solid pieces and have no picks for a long time.

The theory is that the Pistons buy him out and anyone can scoop him up for practically nothing.

Where are people getting this and why does it keep getting repeated? They're in the middle of trying to sell the franchise. It's not happening.

I haven't looked into it that much. Are they really going to DNP-CD Rip from here until the end of his contract? I don't see anyone picking up that contract any time soon.

they'll have 2 superstars and chauncey billups. granted, they get much worse defensively, but they have their core to build around going forward.

The Pistons are on the hook for Rip for over 26 million for the next two seasons after this. For a guy that's not even playing on a team that isn't going anywhere I don't see why an ownership change would preclude buying him out. Enlighten me.

No not forever but they aren't buying him out this year. Maybe after the new CBA gets finalized they try to work something out but not during this season. I keep seeing national guys talk about how the Celtics or Bulls or whoever would have interest if he was bought out. Well no [expletive]. Most contenders would have interest if it doesn't cost anything.

The local guys (plus Marc Stein and others who use some sense) have said there's no way he's getting bought out this year.

i agree, it would seem like buying him out would make the franchise look more attractive. an old guy sitting on the bench and making tons of money for a couple of years doesn't seem to be a very nice piece to build your franchise around to me.

Yeah, I don't like this trade from the Knicks perspective. I wouldn't like it from the Bulls perspective either, as they have a potentially more difficult 1st round matchup this year.

i would imagine that starting for the bulls would interest rip more than playing for any other contender.

Now they've given up a couple solid pieces and have no picks for a long time.

1. Obviously the threat that he might sign an extension with NJ (or Denver) is hard to tell. That is kind of a big wild card. I'm kind of assuming the threat was real enough.

2. Consider that Chandler would be renounced to sign Melo, so that means nothing. Felton for Billups is close enough. Then they gave up Gallo who's best position is SF, which Melo plays. Mosgov is no big deal. The 2014 pick sucks in the context that the Knicks have given up so many picks, but just considering it in this deal, is not of huge value. Anthony Randolph was out of the rotation, so they haven't lost anything there. Curry is obviously filler.

3. Obviously depth is shot. They got some other players back though, including Brewer from Minnesota (which wasn't in initial reports). If they really want to they will only need to run 7-8 in the playoffs. As I've stated before though, they can rebuild that depth in FA.

4. Having no picks is bad, but that reality isn't because of this deal.
