My thoughts are that it didn't happen that way so its fruitless to speculate on it.

But since you asked, no I don't think Mike Quade gets hired if Lou stays the entire season.

My guess is Wedge or Melvin would have been our next manager if Lou had stayed. Which I wouldn't have wanted, but I also think that if Lou HAD stayed, we'd have finished out 13-24 or so, instead of 24-13. netting us a much better draft pick. Mainly because Lou simply didn't care at all near the end. One of the few times I actually think a manager COULD have made a difference in win-loss record substantially.

Just out of curiosity, what do you think Quade did to garner us that record that Lou did not?

I don't really believe managers have much impact on the win/loss record, but these types of changes may have had a short-term effect (from Bruce Levine's article):

The changes were not subtle. On Aug. 23, the team began to take early batting practice before regular batting practice, and it became routine. Quade made sure that players showed up for medicals on time, and if they didn't they were benched. Veterans began to have better communication with the coaching staff, knowing two to three days in advance when they would have a day off. Lineups were posted six hours before game time, something the players had requested while Piniella was still on the job. All of these little things added up to a regiment that defined him to the Cubs front office as the right man for the job.

Yeah, it's basically what KingsCubFan posted. When I read that, it made me think Lou had totally mailed it in and that the players had actually quit on him. I usually don't believe in those type of things, but I think it does possibly matter in this case.

I was curious since I didn't watch much after Lou left and the offensive numbers were worse after Quade took over. The stuff sounds good that Levine talked about, I'm not sure how much it had to do with us improving, though.

It didn't. They beat a couple more crappy teams late in the season. Big deal. It's not like they were beating SF, PHI or hell, even CIN. They played no better.

They were 8-5 against teams competing for the playoffs under Quade. Good, but not really significant of anything.

I'm just glad they went with a relatively low-key signing. I'm always opposed to "big ego" managers who use their legacies as a crutch like Dusty or Lou, and Sandberg and Girardi would have just been more of that.

You are including free falling Cardinals and Padres teams there?

The first Cardinals series, not the second when they were all but eliminated. And yes, I included the Padres series where they were 1 game out and 7-7 in their last 14 going into the series.

And like 3-11 in their previous 14. San Diego was a mirage all season and it caught up to them. They were crap since the middle of August.

I'm on board with that sentiment.
