Too bad the Vikings dug themselves a hole that they might not be able to take advantage of a soft division.

Don't they control their own destiny at this point? Win out and they win the division? edit: yes, win out and they'll be ahead of the bears and packers if both win all their non-viking games

Yes, they dug themselves a hole but it's not that deep.

Eh, [expletive] it. There's basically zero chance they can put together a team to actually take advantage of Cutler's talent any time soon, so they might as well take him down with the ship.

Which is why some people thought this was an odd move to begin with

An odd move? The Bears didn't want to hire Martz. Nobody but him wanted to be OC. Hell, they couldn't get a DC either, and Marinelli had to go from D-line to DC. It's not an ideal coaching staff because none of the top assistants wanted to come in and coach under a lame duck HC.

It wasn't like they hired Martz cuz they thought he was the right man for the job.

From the looks of Chicagosports.com, it looks like the media is turning on Jay Cutler...and that's not a good thing. David Haugh's piece is especially scathing in its critique of Cutler's decision making.

I can't disagree with most of that. Only thing I'd quibble with is not acknowledging that Cutler clearly broke the plane on the fumble.

I'm sure there was someone else that could have taken the job....even if you have to dig down a bit and get someone who isn't considered a hot OC prospect. The question is, would u rather take the chance of having your OC being overwhelmed by the position, or hire someone whose offensive philosophy is the complete opposite of what the Bears need with their talent dispersed the way it is and is also known as being extremely stubborn and unwilling to change much of his scheme to fit a team's strengths. It's a tossup...the Bears probably had some assurances that Martz would make some adjustments to fit the Bears personnel so they went with him.

Just got back from a bar where i watched the game, so don't know any of the fallout and haven't gotten a chance to fully read this thread.

All I know is that the Bears sucked today, but Lovie Smith cost them the game. That was absolutely a touchdown by Cutler and should have been challenged. And the challenge one play before was beyond moronic.

How stupid can a head coach possibly be. Challenge a play that was clearly a correct call when you have 1st and goal on the 0.5 yard line. Furthermore, the Bears were on offense and could've slowed down the play a few seconds to get a good look at the replay. And then, the very next play where a TD was turned into a turnover- no challenge.

What an absolute moron. They should fire him today.

why wouldn't he be mad? lovie smith straight up took a touchdown away from the bears. he challenges a meaningless play, then doesn't challenge a play that obviously would have given the bears a touchdown.

lovie smith is a complete moron when it comes to challenges and managing timeouts. i dont understand how a head coach of an nfl football team can make the same moronic mistakes over and over and over again. it's beyond comprehension.

Gotta be honest. Today was the first time I really started wondering to myself if getting Cutler was the right move. I sure thought it was at the time, and I won't fault Angelo (for that), but if I had a time machine and could warn Angelo away from making the trade...this is the first time I think I'd actually consider it.

Eh. No doubt he had a poor day. But I can't give up on him because everytime I do he has a game where he completes a bunch of passes that 90% of the qbs in the league can't. I need to see what he can do with an average line and competent receivers before I start regretting his hire. I have no doubt orton would have looked just as bad out there yesterday.

I still feel strongly that getting Cutler was the right move. Kyle Orton would be dead behind this offensive line. Who knows what the Bears would have done with those picks, but I definitely don't feel confident that Angelo would have been able to piece together a good o-line with them, so I don't know how much it matters (in terms of the Orton v. Cutler debate).

Having said that, Cutler was obviously garbage yesterday. Some of those throws were maddening to watch. Then his head coach being a moron made it even worse.

I have a hard time being logical about losses for a few days...so I admit, I'm probably overreacting. But still...

We win that game yesterday if Lovie simply challenges the damn QB sneak. That goes down as a Cutler turnover, and I've even heard some morons criticizing Cutler for reaching the ball out!

Argh. That is what grieves me the most. All these other mistakes and bad decisions, yes they happened. Still, we scored 21 points yesterday, but the scoreboard only shows 14 of them.

I'm still livid with our mental midget head coach for not challenging that TD. If you're going to be that stupid, don't be so damn stubborn about it. But I guess that goes along with being that stupid in the first place.

He had two bad throws on picks and two where his piece of crap receivers hung him out to dry. His other turnover, the fumble, wasn't a freaking fumble and instead was a touchdown. If he didn't have a complete freaking moron for a head coach they win that game and he isn't even attempting the passes he was desperate to make late since he was the only one on offense playing that game. That loss was on Lovie and it's going to go down as a Cutler game because the coach sucks, and despite the fact that Cutler kept them in the game by himself for the first half.

I don't disagree, but there were also a few throws that should have been picks, but weren't. Regardless, it doesn't matter. The point is I still support the Cutler trade and I think we all agree Lovie is an idiot.

And also it needs to be mentioned -- we've got a ref right on the damn goal line. Why is it we aren't getting the correct call from the ref so often in this league?

That's a clear damn touchdown. The ref is positioned right on the goal line to make that call.

Are these guys sleeping through the game? That's an easy call to make. What the eff is going on in this league. That's just base incompetence, I'm sorry. But that's what it is.

The play happens in an instant and the line of sight is not perfect. It's kind of difficult. But that is why you have instant replay and that is why you have people upstairs telling the head coach to challenge a play. The refs were horrible on multiple non-holding calls though.

I'm a little late to the party, but was the lack of a challenge discussed by Lovie? I am flabbergasted how you can not challenge that after foolishly challenging the play before.

It was quintessential Lovie.

The only reason I'm not flabbergasted is that it was completely predictable as it was happening.

It was discussed in Lovie language...which is to say that he mentioned it, and said nothing all at once.

I'm really just numb from that whole goal line thing.

After that, I think I just started laughing every time something happened in that game. It was no longer so much a football game as it was an inevitable march towards absurdity.

There was so much wrong with that sequence my brain is overloaded from it all.

Of course it wound up being the point difference that cost us the game, too. Obviously that's what happens after something like that.

But then again, let's be fair: after retaining Lovie & Angelo back in January, we all pretty much knew late October we'd be sitting here wallowing in the badness of it all. So it's not like I'm surprised.

No, I'm not surprised. But at the same time and related to your other point I have to think that decision led to some major disappointment by the players. How much faith can Cutler have in his coaches if they are getting him killed and not reviewing touchdowns he scored that were called fumbles? If Lovie isn't doing everything he can to win games, and if he is in fact directly costing them points, players have to be irate. They probably won't say anything because they generally like how Lovie treats them in relation to how other coaches treat them, but my god, I would be livid with the head coach if he was making those decisions in a game I was playing.
