I'm pretty sure MLB won't ban maple bats until somebody dies as a result.

When has the MLB ever taken precautionary moves on anything? Booze is still allowed in most MLB clubhouses, steroids weren't a problem until Congress came calling and it's still the only major sports league without instant replay.

What's wrong with that?

I personally have a problem with alcohol in the workplace. Why is it necessary in a clubhouse? I'm not the players aren't drinking up pre-game, but the costs don't outweigh the benefits in my eyes.

What does necessity have to do with anything? Do you only allow necessities in the workplace?

Let me turn it around, why should alcohol be allowed in MLB clubhouses?

Because it's a legal product and the vast majority of people present are of legal age. But don't turn it around, you want to ban things based on your own personal problems with them, you do the legwork.

Do you personally have a problem with tobacco in the workplace?

So because it's legal and people are of legal age, that's the only rationale? Well, heck, let's allow guns in the workplace and see how that works out!

I mean seriously, if it wasn't a problem, then fine. But several teams have already banned it due to problems it has caused (I'm specifically referring to the Cardinals who I believe banned it after Scott Spezio) out of the ballpark.

This isn't junk food. I don't see why people are so in favor of keeping it.

If it's right in front of me, yes. That's why workplaces force people outside to smoke.

I don't see why you are getting your panties in a bunch over it. You have to really justify banning stuff using something other than "I have a problem with it."

That's just silly. There is alcohol in many business places.

If someone gets drunk and hurts themselves or others, and the company allowed the alchohol as a matter of policy -- they're liable.

Fixed.

Please see: Wright, David re: Helmets.

MLB will always play favorites. if Derek Jeter got struck by the bat, they'd have an emergency meeting to discuss the issue

Supposedly there is an ash shortage, so that is why MLB won't ban the maple bats. I think Bud is getting some under the table payments from the maple bat makers.

You are talking about a place of business whose 2nd most lucrative reason for existing is to sell beer, it's not a junior high.

How does that matter? There are many reasons to be against alcohol in the workplace. I don't see why it is such a big deal for him to be against it. As someone already pointed out, many things are legal, it doesn't make them good to have in the workplace. I don't understand the obsession with having alcohol available immediately after the game? As you pointed out it is legal and the players who are over 21 can go to their favorite establishment and purchase as much beer as they wish outside of the workplace.

There actually is an ash shortage in the states. The "emerald ash borer" has wreaked havoc on ash trees in Illinois (specifically an Ash farm in McLean County). If you see a purple bag hanging from a tree in the woods, they are checking for the emerald ash borer. Not quite sure how it works though.

I think it's safe to say a major league clubhouse is not the typical workplace, and that the rules regarding alcohol and other conduct vary widely in different industries. I can relate it to when I used to work in a pizza kitchen, and after a long busy night on the line, it was nice to sit up at the bar and have a drink or two, hang out with the co-workers. Conversely, at the job I currently I have drinking is not permitted, and doing so in the break lounge even after a shift would raise a few eyebrows and probably result in some sort of disciplinary action. I think the MLB clubhouse is more akin to the first of the two circumstances. If guys are going to be hanging out, relaxing after a game playing cards or video games, they of legal age should be allowed to imbibe. It's up to the manager and veteran players to make sure it doesn't become a ridiculous frat-house situation and players that display problem behaviors associated with drinking should be dealt with on an individual basis. Though ultimately both in a restaurant and clubhouse setting, if the owner/GM/manager wants a dry workplace for their employees they have every right to make that policy.

As to a shortage of ash wood for baseball bats... it's a renewable natural resource that when grown has positive environmental repercussions and can be easily harvested AND is in demand by some of the highest paid athletes in the world? Come on entrepreneurship, somebody step up and fill this market void.

edit: didn't see that ash can be afflicted by some botanical disease, that's a much more complicated situation.

Apparently birch bats have started to come into vogue. I have to wonder how they stack up to maple and ash.

Al Yellon has been banging the drum to get MLB to take action on this. I doubt it'll go anywhere, but maybe we'll see some changes next year.

Fear the drunk guy swinging the broken maple bat!

when the game is over are the players considered off the clock? because then i would see it as permissible.

it should really be up to individual teams though. alcohol in the clubhouse can actually help a team relax if it's full of people that aren't raging alcoholics.
