2011 season to open on Wednesday, March 30

The season starts with an ESPN special on March 30, a Wednesday. Openers begin in earnest the next day.

 

Cubs will open versus Pittsburgh on Friday, April 1. The BP series will be at the Cell on June 20-22, at Wrigley July 1-3. The Giants will come to Wrigley twice.

Get ready for something new in 2011.

 

The 2011 Major League Baseball regular season will begin with the Brewers at the Reds, the Angels at the Royals, the Braves at the Nationals, the Tigers at the Yankees, and the Padres at the Cardinals.

 

On a Thursday.

 

The tentative master schedule was announced on Tuesday, and the major change is the season's earlier start and finish, as recommended by the Commissioner's Special Committee for On-Field Matters. Those five games will open the season on March 31 after a shortened Spring Training, followed by 11 April 1 games. The season's final regularly scheduled games will be played on Wednesday, Sept. 28 -- all in the interest of not playing baseball into November.

I for one will miss the November ending. It makes for a fantastically shortened offseason.

It's rare and usually involves either a season-opening series outside the USA (Japan, Taiwan) or a team playing in a major league-ready venue near their home stadium, as the Rays have done when they've played a series or two in Orlando, and the latter's not truly neutral anyway.
