Castro would start every game possible over the next 10 years if I had my way and I would bear the children of Geovany Soto. I just think the organization gains nothing by giving Darwin Barney, Sam Fuld and Bobby Scales playing time.

For those saying that Chirinos is of no value whatsoever in a trade, do you think the same of Kila Ka'aihue?

Not exactly identical situations since Chirinos has been in the system for 10 years and hasn't ever had any buzz or recognition to compare to Kila. But to answer your question, Kila doesn't have much trade value at all either.

On the other hand, to be fair, if the Cubs don't put Chirinos on the 40 man this fall, he'll get picked by some other team.

You said the Cubs don't develop position players. While they haven't until recently, Soto, Castro and to a lesser extent Colvin prove that they can develop some talent.

Just for fun, here's a roster of MLB players that came up through the Cubs system or made their MLB debut with the Cubs:

-this is off the top of my head

1st Hinske

2nd Theriot

SS Cedeno

3rd Mcgahee

LF Patterson

CF Pie

RF Fox

C- none that I can think of

SP

Nolasco

Moyer

Willis

Garland

Lohse

RP

Farnsworth

Wuertz

Ohman

Gallagher

Aardsma

that would be one of the worst offenses in baseball history (even if you assigned them an average catcher).

until soto, the cubs hadn't had a home-grown all star position player since mark grace. that is horrendous. i also remember reading something about how brett jackson might become the first home-grown outfielder to hit 15 home runs and have a .270 EqA in consecutive years since billy [expletive] williams.

Yes. And Jake Fox, Micah Hoffpauir, Brad Snyder, Dallas McPherson, and countless other AAAAers in their late 20's. Every organization has them. I do wish that the Cubs would give them chances rather than signing the likes of Nady, Miles, and Hill, but now that they're a bit more cash strapped, we'll likely be seeing these guys filling out bench spots over the next few years rather tharandom free agents.

As for Barney, Fuld, and Scales, I guess I agree on Fuld and Scales, but Barneys just as good as any backup MI that Hendry could overpay for, and I have nothing against giving him PT.

Chirinos and Smith are fringe guys that aren't going to get you much even if they come up and hit .350 for the month.

Geovany Soto spent 3 years at Iowa before coming up at age 25. Chirinos is 26 and has put up ridiculous wOBAs the last 2 years including .428 this year. I'm not saying he is anywhere near the caliber of Geovany Soto but you can't tell me that no team would consider him a decent inclusion in a trade package. Obviously he isn't a centerpiece, but he has value.

He was available last offseason to any team that wanted to take him in the Rule 5 draft.

Nobody did.

That would have cost 50k (25k really if you offered him back to his original team and they took him back).

I'm quite aware of that. Did I suggest otherwise?

Not at all. It was just additional information I thought would-be beneficial to anybody whotrying to put an approximate dollar vale on him.

Kerry Wood?????????? Did Andres Torres come up through the system? Or did we get him from somewhere else before he went to the Giants?

I excluded Kerry because he was obvious. Torres bounced around the minors for awhile before his breakout with the Giants. And I'm pretty sure he was in the majors with the Tigers a few years back.

Make Fox the catcher (since that's where he started his career) and use both Pattersons in the OF.

Molina is still playing (or was that draft too long ago?)

ETA: Jorgenson also reached the majors

Mets-?

Angel Pagan

Reds- none

Jim Edmonds

D Bags- ?

Is Augie still in their system? I think he is, but I'm not sure.

Didn't Pagan make his debut with the Mets?

Edmonds never played in the Cubs farm system.

I'm not sure if Ojeda is still around but good one.

Mariners- Aardsma (made his debut with the Cubs)

Actually he debuted with the Giants. We traded Hawkins for him and Jerome Williams.

Now there's a name I completely and utterly forgot... what happened to Jerome Williams? Doesn't look to be playing this year, did he get cut?

He got cut a couple years ago by the A's, although he hasn't pitched in the majors since Washington in 2007.

I think it was conditioning and attitude that did him in.

He's bounced around between the minor leagues for various MLB organizations and independent league teams over the last few years and currently plays in Taiwan.

Pagan came up with the Mets but made his debut with the Cubs.

Ojeda is still a terrible backup in Arizona. He somehow finagled more than 200 at bats in 08 and 09 each.

Not a bad attitude, but just a meh attitude. That's just what I'm remembering from news reports. I may be completely off base.
