Thankfully we won last night.

I'd say Friday is pretty close to another must-win situation. You have to take care of business against Columbus and STL down the stretch.

This team is just so inconsistent. One night they look like world beaters the next mediocre. That said, there were a number of factors at play against the Hawks tonight.

-2nd of a back to back when the first game was a hard fought overtime road win over their arch rivals

-Road game (hawks have worst road record of the 8 playoff teams

-No Sharp and Bolland against a great defensive team and a stingy goalie.

That said I would have loved to get a point.

Hawks just 4-4-2 since their 8 game winning streak finished. Not the way to make a playoff push. That's 10 of 20 possible points. Not going to cut it.

Hawks have scored just one 5-on-5 goal in their last 158 minutes of hockey.

I should look this up before I just say this, but it sure seemed like Toews and Hossa played some serious minutes last night while the 4th line guys didnt get much time.

In the shocker to end all shockers, Phoenix and Dallas was decided in a shootout. How does this happen every single time? At least this time Dallas is the team with 1 point.

They are now 3 points behind the Hawks with 1 game in hand on us.

St. Louis beats Detroit 10-3. Didn't see the box score but I'm guessing it was a pick six.

pretty good night. dallas and la both lose in regulation, but the preds win.

3 points up on a playoff spot now

It's pretty much between the Hawks and Dallas now for that 8th spot. I will not have a good feeling going up against Vancouver in the first round, even if we have had their number. Though how awesome would it be to knock them out again.

Cart before horse though. Gotta get two points tonight.

I'd say the games against Columbus and STL are games we absolutely have to win. Dallas has two tough games at Los Angeles and Anaheim this weekend, but their schedule next week is pretty easy compared to ours.

Just win tonight.

we could easily move past the 7th spot

Dammit I thought we were going to get an easy win when I saw the Hawks up 2-0 with 10 minutes gone in the game....2 minutes later its 2-1 and the BJ are on the power play

6 powerplays for the blue jackets. They finally took advantage and it's tied. This is pathetic.

Hawks have absolutely dominated by Columbus since the 2-0 lead. Poor performance for such a critical game. Being outshot 26-17. Probably lucky it's tied.

Oh another PP for the Jackets. That's 7 and it's only middle of 2nd period.

Onto a shootout for a critical point. Wish it didnt come to the crapshoot but hopefully lady luck looks our way.

We had some fantastic chances in the OT period. I thought the game was over a couple of times.

PS I'm really happy to see Sammy Paulssen has finally recovered from his concussion

If St. Louis holds on here against Calgary, the Flames are basically done, 5 points back with 3 to play.

Of course they didn't. I can't complain, though. We didn't have any business winning tonight as Columbus thoroughly outplayed us after the first five minutes in the game.

I'll definitely take those two points tonight.

and dallas is now on life support. we're up 5 points on them (they do have one game in hand) and we own the tiebreaker

How do we own the tiebreaker? Isn't the first tiebreaker H2H record? If so, the Stars are 3-1 against us this year. Or is the first tiebreaker number of wins? If so, the Hawks are 4 wins up with 5 to play, so while we haven't locked it up, its all but locked up.

according to espn.com, the first tiebreaker (after points) is total NON-shootout wins. i looked and the blackhawks have 3 more non-shootout wins than dallas

SEEDING TIEBREAKERS

The top eight teams in each conference qualify for the playoffs. The division winners in each conference are seeded Nos. 1 - 3, and the remaining five teams are seeded Nos. 4 - 8, according to point total.

TIEBREAKER

In the event teams are tied in the standings, the following tiebreakers are applied to determine which team receives the higher seeding.

1. The fewer number of games played (i.e., superior points percentage).

2. The greater number of games won (not including games won in a shootout).

3. The greater number of points earned in games between the tied clubs. If two clubs are tied, and have not played an equal number of home games against each other, points earned in the first game played in the city that had the extra game shall not be included. If more than two clubs are tied, the higher percentage of available points earned in games among those clubs, and not including any "odd" games, shall be used to determine the standing.

i guess they could still catch us in total wins but if that happens we're probably behind them anyways

Looking at the remaining schedules, all the Pacific teams other than Dallas have really tough schedules:

1. Canucks, 4 -- Flames, Wild, Oilers x2

2. Sharks, 5 -- Yotes x2, Kings, Ducks x2

3. Red Wings, 5 -- Preds, Hawks x2, Wild, Hurricanes

4. Coyotes, 3 -- Sharks x2, Kings

5. Kings, 5 -- Sharks, Yotes, Ducks x2, Stars

6. Preds, 4 -- Red Wings, BJ's, Blues, Thrashers

7. Ducks, 5 -- Sharks x2, Kings x2, Stars

8. Hawks, 5 -- Red Wings x2, Blues, Canadiens, Lightning

9. Flames, 3 -- Canucks, Avs, Oilers

10. Stars, 6 -- Kings, Ducks, Wild, BJ's, Avs x2

Caught the first two periods on the radio last night while driving up to Chicago, and John and Troy were flat-out lambasting this team for a lack of effort after they took the 2-0 lead. This game should have been a walk, but even now, with their season on the line, this team can't seem to put together a consistent effort.

If they get in, and don't start playing like they did on that winning streak, Vancouver will eat them alive.

Going to my first Blackhawks game tomorrow against the Lightning (and then the Cubs game on Monday). Should be a fun game, it was the last time they played.

I think it is going to be real fun. Tampa is a great team to watch and the Hawks will probably skate with them. Should be some real fun up and down the ice action. Just the type of game that the NHL should get on National TV. Oh well I am sure the Rangers/Flyers will be dull...oops I mean exciting
