This season is going to make me a nickel richer!

I'm really excited to see the new Hawks, as well as see how well the core responds to shedding so many teammates and friends and of course, winning it all last season. It's going to be real interesting.

After how long camps drag on for football (not to mention spring training), it surprises me every year how fast hockey and basketball start the season once they show up for first practice.

Seriously. Especially because baseball spring training is about 7 weeks long, and football training camp is about the same. It's weird to see training camps wrapped up in 3-4 weeks.

If they could figure out a way to make money off it I'm sure they'd make it go longer.

If only the other two sports were like that.

The Hawks signed Ryan Potulny, formerly of Edmonton to a two-way 500k contract. He had 15 goals and 17 assists last year but apparently isn't all that great if he's getting a 2 way contract. I'd imagine his 32 points on a horrible team is the equivalent of a mediocre NBA player scoring 20 ppg for a bad team, because someone has to score. But that's just a guess.

Really looking forward to that banner going up while Babcock & Co. watch.

I've got the final games of the SJ and PHI series on DVR. Think I'll need to add this one to complete the chain.

That's alot of HDD space taken up on my DVR though.

The Blackhawks will announce a contract extension for head coach Joel Quenneville on Thursday afternoon, the team said in a news release.

The Hawks have called a news conference for 2:30 p.m.

I remember when we hired Q, some of the talk was that he couldn't win in the big games, couldn't win in the playoffs.

You can't win the big games, until suddenly you do win the big games.

He's been the right guy at the right time for the Hawks.

I heard some criticism about working with kids and winning in the playoffs. Neither holds up now.

He still has the stigma that he can't beat Detroit in the playoffs.

His alltime record in the playoffs against Detroit is 6-20 and his regular season record against Detroit (not including last season) is 21-49-12.

Detroit has also beat a Quenneville coached team in the playoffs during each of their last 4 Stanely Cup championship runs.

I guess there will always be something that people can point to.

Q can point to his ring.

Yeah, same here. I let go of '09 Game 6 vs. Canucks (Kane hattie) after they won this year. I'll probably get rid of all but Games 5 and 6 vs. Philly.

Do you mean seriously as in "I hadn't heard those stats before" or seriously as in "I can't believe you are ripping on the coach that just gave us a cup"

If its the latter, that is not my intent. I love Q for the most part. I'm just saying that not beating Detroit and not winning the Cup were his 2 stigmas that kept him from being an elite coach. He has fixed the bigger of the 2 issues, but the Detroit issue remains, fairly or not.

The latter, but fair enough, I guess.

NHL.com reports: Dustin Byfuglien, whose play at forward helped the Blackhawks win the 2010 Stanley Cup, is looking forward to shifting back to defense as a new member of the Atlanta Thrashers.

"It's just coming up the ice and being able to see everything and being able to read the game," Byfuglien said of his preference for being a defenseman. "You control so much more of the game back there. It's just something I enjoy doing."

Asked what went through his mind when he learned the Blackhawks, as part of a salary dump, had traded him to the Thrashers, Byfuglien said, "Right away I was actually bummed. After coming off of winning the Cup ... you're still in a celebration mode, but once I got off the phone and sat down and really thought about it, I was excited. I was ready to get out of there and get ready for a new change and set new goals for myself. I'm excited and I can challenge myself for new things in life. It's just another step."

Mucho love for Big Buff.......until we play the Thrashers :)

It still boggles my mind that the season is starting up again tomorrow (preseason at least). It feels like a week ago I was watching the victory parade. Doesn't seem possible that we're ready to compete for a Cup again. I havent gotten my fix of enjoying it yet. Guess we'll have to try to win it again.

I don't feel like the season has crept up on me, but it's going to take some getting used to watching with the vast majority of the pressure off. Sure, I want the team to repeat. But I just feel a little more complacent, or I guess content. I hope the team isn't of the same mind though, of course. And I'm sure Q isn't.
