Therefore, nobody should care about who the manager is? (Almost) everyone knows Hendry is a problem. That's no reason to throw up your hands about the manager. He'll obviously have some input on player acquisitions. Maybe we don't know where Fredi is on this, but I'm not seeing any other appealing options.

Yeah, with Hendry as GM still there's no reason to care about who the manager is. It really doesn't matter. The only appealing option is getting a new GM.

I agree it's clearly time for him to go, but I'd like the best managerial candidate brought in regardless.

That would only prolong Hendry's employment.

I fear Ricketts has a very "typical fan" attitude about baseball, focusing more on managers and their in-game decisions plus "blaming the players" when they don't come through instead of looking deeper at the guy who acquired those players.

I worry that he thinks the last eight years have been a success because, "Hey, I remember really sucking in the 70's-90's. Hendry is great compared to that."

FWIW, which is not much, Kaplan was on KXNO in Des Moines yesterday and said it was Girardi's job to say no to. He said everone else is lumped in together after him. He didn't even sound like anyone else will be a consideration until Girardi turns them down.

As I mentioned, this is Kaplan we're talking about.

Only speculation, but it sounds like Girardi is the favorite, followed by Gonzalez, with Sandberg coming in third.

Girardi would be much worse than Sandberg for the simple fact that he will have 2 WS rings as a manager (likely) before he takes on the Cubs. He's flat out terrible in the same way Sandberg is, the only difference is he has had the best talent in baseball to overcome him. People (outside of us internet nerds) won't critique his work b/c, "he has two rings".

Yuck, yuck, and more yuck.

Anyone else get the feeling that Ricketts is basically the Trib? It seems like a whole bunch of the same bs. I don't see any positive changes. We're still going to have Hendry around and we're going to end up with the same type of manager who wants the same toolsy players or high k, but wild pitchers on the roster. Bleh.

The results of that poll are depressing...and is likely an annoying reflection of what the casual fan thinks.

That was very predictable.

Ryne Sandberg will be named Pacific Coast League manager of the year today, the Iowa Cubs confirmed Thursday.

In Sandberg's first season as Cubs manager, the team was a season-high 21 games over .500 entering Thursday's contest at Albuquerque.

The Cubs are a in a duel with Memphis and Omaha for the PCL's Northern Division title. Memphis and Iowa play four games at Principal Park, starting at 7 p.m. today, to end the regular season. The Cubs have had at least a share of the division lead for 47 straight days.

"You're going to read different speculation every day," Hendry said. "You'll hear about who the front-runners are and who was eliminated and who's not in it. It's all basically conjecture, because I haven't talked to anybody about any of it [as far as who is the leading candidates].

"As I said before, there's no leading candidate. There hasn't been, and there won't be until I take the final evaluation to [owner] Tom [Ricketts] and his family."

that was, both with name recognition. Like that Eddie Murpy movie where he runs for the senate. Let's hope the Ricketts use their smarts that made them billionaires to make this decision, and not listen to the fans

I can't say this with any confidence but hiring Sandberg could very well be the smart financial move. It would create a lot of attention and get a lot of fans more interested. And if you consider that he probably wouldn't make more than a couple games' difference either way, it wouldn't surprise me if Sandberg was the smartest choice from Rickett's perspective.

I never watch the yankees so I know little about Girardi as an in game manager now. but for all of this talk about world series rings I was much more impressed with him while with the marlins though. He seemed to make the right moves for the right situations, a no brainer yet something that Lou was really lost on. Plus he did quite a good job with a bunch of young kids many of which blossomed under his tutelage and after some tough love. It seems like these are some of the main things we want out of a manager.

I watch Yankee games often and I don't think there's a better bullpen manager than Girardi. He seems to know how to handle pitchers. He's also very good at handling the press. He's probably not leaving the Yankees.

Ben Cherington or Jed Hoyer at GM and Fredi Gonzalez at manager plz.

Probably the most common complaint I've read/heard from Yankees fan/media about Girardi is how he handles his pitchers.

They're Yankee fans. I have this same debate with them. Nice people but they say that because at some point this season the bullpen probably blew a game. He tends to know who's got the hot hand when there's injuries, which there are. When the bullpen is healthy everyone's got a pretty well defined role.

I'd tolerate Girardi if it meant Hendry being fired. I really don't know if I could take Sandberg as manager with a new GM. That seems like a recipe for catastrophe.

Ask Josh Johnson what he thinks about Joe.

Also, he has Mariano at the end, the rest of their pen has been a mess for most of the year. I'm not real sure how many games you've watched but they probably weren't the same games I watched.
