I think it would probably help baseball if Ripken used, really. Or Maddux or Griffey, too. It would make people realize that cheating has existed forever in this game, and maybe we could all get past it, finally.

No it wouldn't. It would make people lose faith in the game of baseball itself.

that's pretty stupid and melodramatic, but i guess stupid and melodramatic describes the majority of baseball fans, so maybe you're right

A lot of people talk about losing faith in the game, but I still have no idea what that actually means. Would you like, stop believing that the game existed, or just come to the realization that most millionaires aren't ideal role models?

No, it would mean that the game has lost its purity-- that the talent you're seeing on the field isn't natural, it's chemically-enhanced and therefore fake, making it no better than WWE in the eyes of a lot of fans.

Baseball is also not very good at policing itself. It never has been.

NEWSFLASH: every baseball player is chemically enhanced with loads of supplements. a single baseball player spends more on supplements in a month than you make in 3.

The difference is that when a player takes the kind of supplements that Bonds and so many others took, the results it brings far exceed anything that you can get at GNC. Every baseball player takes supplements, not everyone takes horse steroids or HGH.

Stop making excuses for their idiotic and illegal behavior.

first off, no they don't. and that's not even the point. the point is that baseball isn't "pure" in the sense that everyone cries about, so it's kind of a stupid thing to get upset about.

secondly, illegal? sure. idiotic? bonds uses stacks of 100s as coasters. Clemens, if he hadn't perjured himself like a moron, would be burning money that he gathered during a decade of extra baseball, all thanks to steroids.

My point is exactly the point and you know it. If you didn't think it was the point you would have said, "Well everyone takes roids so what's the difference." Clemens was done until he took roids. Bonds broke records that no one could have broken by taking the most powerful stuff GNC makes. What Clemens and Bonds took obviously is unbelievably powerful and they new it which is why they took it. Clemens and Bonds had plenty of money before they decided to juice. I guarantee they would give all the extra money they made back if they could trade that for getting inducted into the HOF.

Bonds and Clemens are idiotic precisely because what they did is going to keep them out of the HOF. Being idiotic is taking something that you didn't need that will result in losing baseball immortality and honor.

Which of these guys would hurt baseball more if we found out they used steroids? Derek Jeter, Ken Griffey Jr, Greg Maddux, or Cal Ripken Jr?

I'll go with the one that's still active. Although I was tempted to say the one in NYC ;)

Holy hyperbole Batman!

A guy taking that quantity of legal supplements would be in the ER daily.

Obviously, we have ZERO idea as to when a player started using or how long he used for. That said, even though Bonds was a gigantic douche, part of me feels sorry for him, since he would have been a HOFer with or without the roids, in all likelihood. Since it appears at least that he didn't start juicing until Bonds and Sosa started with the 60 homer seasons.

Feel sorry for him why? He made his own bed.

If he was satisfied with being great rather than obsessed with being the best (and specifically focused on one-upping Sosa and McGwire), his HOF ticket would've been guaranteed.

To me anyway, the fact that he got caught up in having to be the best IS what I'm sorry for, I guess. He was a 500/500 guy most likely without the roids and would have gone down as one of the all time greats. But, seeing other guys passing him was too much for him to handle. Especially 2 guys like McGwire and Sosa, who weren't HOF caliber players without the juice most likely.

your train of thought is so off the rails that by the time i got halfway through this, i was too bored to come up with a reply. basically i'm right, so proceed at your own risk.

i bet you 100000 million dollars (im good for it) that bonds and clemens feel no remorse. well, clemens might have a little once he's spending a couple years in martha stewart's ward at riker's or whatever.

They might have no remorse now, but when they are both in jail or put under probation and never get into the HOF they will feel differently. Baseball is not just about records and money. People who don't have any money like you and I are the only ones who say that.

Not like that, obviously, but an asterisk with something like "player used performance-enhancing drugs during playing career" underneath it.

Let's save on some asterisks and just put it one on the front door.

They all shouldn't be lumped in together. Gehrig, Mays, Wagner, Ted Williams, etc shouldn't have their accomplishments diminished because of known steroid cheats.

I say, let the steroids guys into the HOF but make them feel pretty miserable about it. Don't let them talk at their induction, put an asterisk on their cap instead of team logo, and make them pay an annual membership fee for their spot. That'll show em.

If you put them in and there was proof they juiced, it should be mentioned on their HOF plaque.

"Sammy Sosa hit like, a [expletive] ton of HRs. Everybody loved it, especially in 98. Turns out he used steroids, so now a bunch of self-righteous dicks like to pretend that they hated him all along, but they really loved it. In conclusion, Sammy was really [expletive] awesome, but old people will hate him because he used steroids instead of doing something more honorable like stabbing black people(see Cobb, Ty)."

Do you think they'd accept something like that?

Can I fly out to Cooperstown to etch the asterisk in Hank Aaron's plaque?
