Shucks

John Grabow has been diagnosed with a torn medial collateral ligament and will miss the rest of the 2010 season.

Grabow was all set to begin a rehab assignment when he felt a "pop" in his knee on Monday. He turned in a 7.36 ERA over 28 outings this season.

So, since I'm assuming most pro teams insure the contracts against injury, does that mean we might have some more money to spend next year on another reliever? :P

The funny thing about Grabow is though, you KNOW he'll be decent next year and dupe some other team(hopefully not us anyway) into giving him another multi-year deal......

Considering we owe him 4.8 mill next year, I can't even see us DFA'ing him, if he sucks, until August or so either.

Bottom line: One way or another, Grabow is going to piss us off again next year.

Grabow, who hadn't pitched for the Cubs since June 28, has a contract that calls for him to be paid $4.8 million in 2011.

Get bent, Hendry.

Since I hadn't seen Grabow in awhile, I had allowed my mind to deceive itself into believing he didn't exist.

Such a waste of money... At least we didn't have to watch him much this year.

If the time that he did pitch, he gave me enough bad memories to last a lifetime.

This was the best thing I've read all day.

Yep. It's not just the Soriano and Kosuke deals that hang around our collective throats.

Was giving Grabow $5mil/yr ever going to be the "win now" move that put us over the top? I don't think so.

Kind of sad that our best case scenario is him being too injured to ever play again and collecting some insurance cash.

I can't imagine the Cubs have insurance on this guy.

Nah, the best case scenario is he repeats his 2009 ERA of 3.36 and we're able to sell him off to a contender at next year's deadline.

Wouldn't the best case scenario be that he pitches well enough for the Cubs to want to keep him at the deadline but let him walk after the season?

I was assuming the Cubs will suck next year. Truly best case scenario is that he pitches to a 2.00 xFIP and is the top LOOGY for the Cubs as we win the World Series, he becomes a Type A free agent and some other team signs him, netting the Cubs a pair of picks.
