Rotoworld reports that Fontenot has been traded to the Giants for Evan Crawford (INF).

Anyone have details on crawford?

Post 2009 interview with Crawford:

It looks like he was drafted as a CF, now plays in the infield. He saw (sees?) himself as a base stealer, who takes chances, and a typical leadoff hitter. What's he really like? And projectable or not, isn't a 2009 9th round pick, kinda a good haul for Fontenot?

edit: seems that rotoworld has no idea what position he plays. the first newsblurb says INF, the player page says SP, and BR lists his defensive stats as CF. Heh.

But I don't know any scouting reports on him and I'm just basing this off his B-R stats

He was drafted last year and BA had this on him:

Former infielder Evan Crawford looked more comfortable as an outfielder in his junior season, but his athleticism still has yet to translate well to the diamond. He makes good use of his plus speed on the bases but not as much in the outfield. He has yet to fill out his 6-foot-2, 165-pound frame, doesn't have much pop from the right side of the plate and doesn't control the strike zone.

Sounds like a toolsy roll of the dice. BR says he's played CF all this season, so I'm guessing he'll continue being there in Peoria or Daytona. That's about what I'd figure the Cubs would get for someone like Fontenot.

Goodbye Mike Fontenot. I used to like you (when you only played in occasional spots), but not any longer.

Unless you just fell out of a time warp, Fontenot "only playing in occasional spots" would be a generous way to describe his playing time this year.

I was happy when Theriot left.

I was a little sad to see Lilly go.

But damn am I gonna miss Fontenot.

Not that they can do anything about it tonight, obviously, but this would seem to be the move that has Darwin Barney on a flight to San Francisco, right? Castro is now the only shortstop on the roster and with Ramirez and one of Baker or DeWitt in the lineup on a given night (or both when Ramirez isn't playing), that's a single backup for two positions, and even that is assuming they'd feel comfortable playing DeWitt at third.

They should feel comfortable playing DeWitt at 3B. It's his natural position.

But yeah, Barney will be hopping on a plane. It's not a Hendry team without a crazy number of 2B.

from Bruce Levine

The Cubs will call up Darwin Barney from Triple-A Iowa to take Fontenot's place. The team is hoping he will be on the field for Thursday's game in San Francisco.

Crawford is a 22-year-old center fielder playing for Class A Augusta. He's hitting .255 with four homers, 29 RBIs and 24 stolen bases, but he has struck out 108 times against only 35 walks.

Damn it. When I heard the Cubs acquired a Crawford from the Giants, I got excited thinking it was Brandon Crawford.

Evan Crawford is apparently headed to Daytona. Daytona will need to make a corresponding move. The Cubs have not released many players over the course of this season, but my guess is that 26-year old Smaily Borges batting .224 (with some power) or 22-year old speedster Jose Valdez batting .229 (with NO power) is in trouble.

Barney is actually as much a SS as a 2B, right? And the Cubs now need a back up SS so how do you see bringing up Barney as meaning they will have a crazy number of 2B?

I think the Cubs were going to non tender Theriot and Fontenot both in the off season anyway so whatever the minor leaguers Hendry got for them wind up doing is just a bonus.

Barney is exactly what you need as a 24th or 25th man, cheap and versatile, much better than paying millions for a guy like Miles. It is a good thing if the farm system can provide guys like this to provide low cost production.

I didn't mean to imply it wasn't a smart move or that Barney isn't a fine choice.

It's just that Hendry has a history of stockpiling people who can play 2B.

2. no comments on trading a guy mid-series and his inevitable key hit against us tonight or tomorrow?

You're basically criticizing yourself for not being That Guy that you always are.

Barney is more a SS than a 2B.
