It's just words, but...

''We're kind of running things at inopportune times -- we're not dialing stuff up when we could dial stuff up. So it's kind of a cloak-and-dagger thing right now," Cutler told Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times. ''I've said it casually, but we're just kind of calling plays to call plays and get them out there."

Interestingly, when you say that it is the national/rivals who are talking up the Jets and not so much their own fans, I had to think of the Packers. Some of that same dynamic is in play with Green Bay. Their own fans think they'll be good, but are generally more cautious. Others are looking at Rodgers and the way they have been blasting people in preseason and predicting great things for the Pack. But internally, I hear much more caution.

It's the same thing as last year. Our offense looks amazing but our defense looks suspect, although quite a few guys haven't played in the preseason. The team was very laid-back in their approach when the real season started and we weren't real crisp on offense. They've vowed to change that this year and use the same approach that we did in the second half of the season last year, but we'll see. Overconfidence is a major issue with a young team and I really hope we learned from our disappointing first half last season.

Nobody is confident about our defense. I think everyone is fearing the types of games that we had against Pittsburgh and Arizona last year, especially if Harris is PUP-bound. I'm pretty optimistic that they'll be better against the pass this season than we were at the end of last season, but that's not saying a whole lot. Opening day will tell us a lot about where we stand defensively against the Eagles attack.

Wasn't the Packers defense much improved last year?

Sort of. It was really deceptive because we struggled stopping the pass against the likes of Minnesota, Pittsburgh, and Arizona. All of the NFC North teams had relatively weak schedules last year, so we were able to feast on the likes of St. Louis, Detroit twice, Cleveland, etc. Our run defense is legitimately good, but our pass defense is still very suspect. We're going to be very thin at secondary to start the season as well with Harris and Bigby being placed on the PUP list.

Last year, our offensive line was our major concern until the final few weeks of the season. That unit improved significantly as the year progressed and I'm not even really worried about the line now. Our secondary is a different story. Woodson, Harris, and Tramon Williams is a pretty good corner trio. The problem is since Harris is hurt, Williams is put into the #2 spot and then we have a revolving door for our nickel and dime backs. Our schedule isn't easy at all this year but if there is an easy part to it, it'd have to be at the beginning of the season. I think we're putting a lot of trust into an aging Al Harris getting back to form this year but we're going to need him as the season wears on.

Tom Brady started out with similar Hollywood trash before moving up the ladder as his career progressed.

Well it's a good thing Jay is just as smooth and attractive to ladies as Brady is.

Brady wasn't the ladies man he is until he won Super Bowls.

Yeah, nothing like a couple rings to make women's opinion of you change.

That was the rumor around draft time. I'd do the deal but it'd be nice to have had that pick in the fold for this season.

...Of course I don't really think Olsen's value is that high.

RealGM says Bears are shopping Olsen and seeking a 2nd or 3rd round pick in return.

I would have liked to have seen Olsen for one more year in a west coast system before trading him. I just don't want to get rid of Olsen because he doesn't fit Martz's system when Martz and his system are more than likely going to be gone next year.

There is no way on earth they get a second rounder for him.

Posted
It's likely Olsen won't show anything this year, at least numbers wise, that'll make his value any higher after this season.

I would like to keep him to play him next year with a more west coast style offense.

Imagine him and Dallas Clark on the field for Indy, along with Wayne and Garcon. I bet we could get their second rounder next year for him. It would be a late pick anyway.

How about Cinci? They could use a TE, plus their other offensive weapons are as old as dirt.

Indy is not an option. They already have too many receivers as it is. Plus they have a pretty good receiver at tight end sitting the bench because he's a weaker version of Clark already. When they go to 2 tight ends they want a blocking tight end on the other side and they drafted a guy they're excited about this year who will fill that role.

Cincy just drafted Gresham so I don't know if they would want another pass catching tight end.

I have a tough time thinking they can get a 2nd rounder for him right now, unless there's a team desperate for TE help that I'm not aware of. If you can't get at least a three there is no reason to deal him now. See if you can get some production out of him this year and if you're settling for a 4th or later, do it next spring.

As far as Sanchez, he was very awful at times last year, but he was also pretty decent as well.

'09 Sanchez: 53.8% completion, 6.7 yards/attempt, 0.6 TD/INT ratio, 10 fumbles

'08 Jamarcus Russell: 53.8% completion, 6.6 yards/attempt, 1.6 TD/INT, 12 fumbles

Yeah, he sucked. The only times he didn't suck was when he was handing off. He threw a handful of nice passes, but anybody who can get an NFL job can do that on occasion.

He didn't suck in the playoffs.

Yeah, but holy crap those are horrible numbers.

Thank God that's over. Win against Detroit and nobody remembers a thing about this preseason. Most importantly, we should be in pretty good shape health-wise to start the year. Urlacher, Briggs, and Wright are all expected to play in Week 1.

Anyone watching this?

Good God no. There were sporting events on yesterday evening that actually meant something.

I don't think anyone here is actually worried about the Bears finishing the preseason winless, but just in case they are, I'll point out that the Colts were also winless this preseason and were outscored by 70 points in the 4 games (Bears were outscored by 38).

Also, since 2006 the 9 teams that went 0-4 in the preseason had an average record of 7-9 in the regular season. The 7 teams that went 4-0 in the preseason had an average record of.....6-10. Heavily skewed by the 2008 0-16 Lions but without them it comes out to 7.5-8.5 (so 8-8).

But 7-9 would really suck.
