Sounds like Collins might not just here for the preseason...

A week after trying to sign him for the veteran minimum with no guaranteed money, the Bears came back to the 38-year-old veteran quarterback and put money on the table. Enough for him to sign a one-year contract without fearing he'll be used as a camp arm and sent packing before the season begins.

It's believed Collins receiving a signing bonus in the six digits and if he makes the team he will earn more than $1 million this season.

WHY

Hanie must be in bad shape or they plan to release La-Fla-Fla.

I'll take a stab and say they want to release LeFevor, put Hanie as the #3.

Bears keep Gutierrez, waive wide receiver Eric Peterman injured...which means if he clears waivers, he'll go to the IR.

So 5 QB's. Yay.

Peterman's going to get an injury settlement and be released. LaFevor seems destined for the practice squad or outright release. Guitierrez - who I liked when he was briefly at Michigan - also won't be around. I am guessing Cutler-Hanie-Collins.

I know Chris Williams had a bad night on Saturday, but the Trib and the Score are making it out to be the worst that's ever happened ever.

Gutierrez is one of the QBs who was part of that HS team that didn't lose for a decade.

Not that it matters, but I saw his name and that's what immediately came to my mind. I remember he was all set to be Michigan's QB when he went down with injury.

I don't know about that. But the entire premise of the season has been that the only real question on the line is at a guard position, as LT is settled, center is stable, and Omiyale has to be better at RT. Williams not being a stud is a huge problem for this team. They can't afford for him to just be okay, let alone bad. If he struggles just a bit, Cutler could die.

Eh, still overblown even taking the last part as hyperbole. We have seen Williams play 7 games at LT as a Chicago Bear. 5 to end the 2009 season and the 2 preseason games this season. He has had 1 bad game of those 7.

All that was shown is that he will have trouble w/ speed rushers. So, 2 games against Clay Matthews and one against Ware/Spencer in Dallas Martz needs to give him help.

He'll need help with speed rushers, but that's going to be the case with several LTs around the league.

He did fine against Minny when they gave him a little help in the regular season last year. I'll take that as my basis for wanting to see him again in regular season action, rather than judging him as incapable based on a couple preseason games.

You guys are completely misrepresenting at least what the Tribune is saying. I assume the reference is to the Pompei article. Nobody is judging him solely on one preseason game or suggesting they don't want to see him in the regular season. The point of the article is that Peppers has destroyed him in practice and that could have either good or bad effects. Also, he played poorly in the last game and didn't look like the guy we've come to expect. That can be a problem. The Bears need Williams to be really good in order to have any chance of having an offensive line that is effective. It's pretty damn important for this season and the team's future.

All of this came to a head when he gave up 2 sacks on Saturday to a speed rusher with no help. It's completely fair to say that this is highly based on last Saturday.

Of course it is. But the point Pompei was making is that after watching Peppers light him up for a month, and then Williams having a bad game against the Raiders he didn't look like the guy everybody had assumed he was. It does not say the season is over find another tackle no need to play the regular season. I think you people are overreacting to somebody pointing out a potential negative.

The fact is Williams has to be really good out there for this team to have a chance. He has not been very good in practice or in the only preseason game the offense has played so far. There should be some doubt and Williams has to come back and be what everybody expected him to be. It's not doom and gloom or apoplectic. It's not calling his game the worst thing that has ever happened.

You're calling out one article, but Banedon mentioned more than one source where these doom & gloom comments are coming from, and I am hearing it from more than just Pompei as well. Maybe you don't realize that.

He said the trib and the score. I can't refer to whatever he heard on the radio, but I specifically said people were misrepresenting what was said in the Trib article.

I admit, I didn't fully read Pompei's article. I heard Mulley and Hanley referring to it this morning as they freaked out about Williams, and so I kinda made some assumptions.

The overreaction is justified even though it is an overreaction. I may just be rephrasing what others have said, but Williams is one of the biggest X factors, if not the biggest, for the Bears success this season. If he is the player we hoped he would be and we were told he would be in the offseason, then the Bears line looks a lot better as a whole and if Cutler is protected and the run blocking is better then Martz's offense might actually work out and be successful.

But if he's as bad as he was Saturday then we're in big trouble. It is only the preseason so I have to tell myself to not take anything from it (maybe Williams was trying a new technique and struggled in game action with it). Either way, giving up 3.5 sacks to a mediocre pass rusher in one half is absolutely terrible. And then when you consider that the Tribune claimed that 2 of those (I think) were when only 3 guys were rushing, that's just unbelievably bad.

But there's still time and I'm not making any major judgements until the curtains go up.

at his hall of fame induction ceremony, we're all going to look back on this hand-wringing and smile.

I forget what I wrote about the team this offseason, no way I recall what I thought of Williams in 20 years.

It is horrible, no question. One of the commentators I watched pointed out how Williams had his hands way too far inside to be able to bottle up the defender, which lead to an easy ole past him. He did solve that on a successive play, but then appeared to do the same thing again later which lead to another sack.

So I also don't want to make any judgements based on just preseason. I'll wait until he blows in the regular season and then let loose on him 8-)

Hub Arkush just said that barring a terrible 2010 (like 3-13), he thinks the Bear higher ups have changed their minds and that Lovie will be back. If they fired him, they would have to hire somebody and pay that coach's salary if there is a lockout because head coaches (but not assistants) get paid during lockouts (right?).

Hub also said he thinks there is a good possibility that Angelo will retire at the end of this season.

I missed the Bears/Raiders game and then the first repeat but for some reason I woke up at like 4 AM and saw the first half on NFL Network.

Even in my blearly eyed state it's impossible to overstate how bad Chris Williams was.

Posted this in the preseason thread that Sidney Rice is rumored to have had season-ending hip surgery in Denver.
Sounds like it may only be the first half of the season, but still a significant blow to the Vikings (especially with Harvin's migraines to deal with as well).

Jeff Backus sucks at LT and the Lions line wasnt very good either. Martz team still put up #s with Jon Kitna, Mike Furrey and Shaun McDonald, etc. Williams>/=Backus. Williams played pretty good at LT at the end of the year, until his play becomes a trend then i will be worried.

This preseason can't get over soon enough.
