Field conditions are usually worse in the minors. The first basemen don't save as many errors as Derrek Lee either.

And you're also basing some of it on projection.

And errors are far from the most important thing about fielding.

This is a mixture of my limited knowledge of stats and my superior knowledge of gut feelings.

1. Brett Jackson

2. McNutt

3. Archer

4. Vitters

5. Lake

6. Jay Jackson

7. Lee

8. Rhee

9. Carpenter

10. Reed

Wow...Austin Reed in the top 10!?

I could see Reed hitting the back end of BA's top 30, if he continues to pitch like he has.

How high he rates will depend on what BA hears about his arm. If they get some buzz reports, whether from Cubs or from other scouts who mention him, that he has a really electric arm and projects well as a player-converting-to-pitch prospect, he could rank pretty high. (McNutt ranked in the mid-teens last year, for example.)

But if nobody is talking present-or-projected-95+, and it's totally about his rookie-league stats, maybe not that high.

I've never gotten any feedback on what his signing bonus was, either. I've assumed he's standard slot $150. But if BA has that he got $325, and that he projects well, and that he has an exceptional arm, and that the Cubs are really buzzed, he could get into the teens.

I just know too little. The two positives are that he's doing well and Arizona Phil referred to his stuff as "electric". That could mean a lot, because Phil rarely says that kind of thing, he usually just reports results and whether the guy throws strikes. But it might not mean that much either. If not, Reed could be one of a ton of guys who put up some good numbers in rookie without getting immediate recognition.

I hope he is a big stud prospect, and is this year's version of McNutt. Or better.

BA hasn't listed Reed's bonus amount. They always list anyone who has gotten at least $100k and enough time has passed since he's signed that I think it's safe to assume he got less than 6 figures. In fact, Fitzgerald is the only one listed after round 10.

Reed is still 18, pitching great, and there are good reports about his stuff. My superior knowledge of gut feelings will give me the last laugh.

Plus since nobody else seemed like a real sure-fire top 10 guy, I thought I'd dig deep into my gut instead of putting somebody like Coleman or Barney. It was down to him, Sczurz, Kurcz, and Kirk.

Must not be a fan of our top picks then, eh? :)

This highlights the bugaboo with the 3 top prospects- Archer, Vitters & B. Jackson… All 3 have an issue with their game that must be improved for eventual success in the majors- Archer & his control, Vitters’ walk rate & B. Jackson’s K rate. Both Archer & Vitters made significant progress with their issues. B. Jackson has not; thus-

you're being pretty generous in saying that vitters made significant progress - yes he walked more than last year, but his walk rate still sucks. and his K's went from 65 in 120 games last year to 63 in 91 games this year (in other words, significantly worse). plus it's not like vitters only has one weakness - his power has come and gone and he didn't show much of it this year, and his defense is still bad. overall brett jackson is easily the better player right now because he really has one hole (strikeouts), vitters has a bunch.

Geez, Vitters more than doubled his walk rate from the previous season, I don’t understand complaining about that?!? The minors is all about improving your game. Vitters has done this for 3 years now. Still waiting on Jackson to do something about those K’s.

Vitters is still on track to play 3B on the major league level. His skill set is solid. Errors are always a concern, but you don’t want to be myopic about them for prospects 20 & under in the minors; especially for SS & 3B. On major league projection,. Jackson needs to confirm he’s a major league CF. He becomes a much different prospect as a corner outfielder.

When judging prospects, age factor is an overwhelming consideration. When Jackson was as old as Vitters is now, Jackson was hitting .295 with a K rate close to 30% in low-A Peoria... advantage Vitters

Errors for young SS & 3B are the norm, it’s about skill set.

Lee is scouted with Dunston speed & arm strength with good hands--- this is like comparing a prospects power to Babe Ruth.

I like top end ceiling guys & Reed projects there. Very good reports on his stuff in rookie ball.

I base this on age, consistency and excellence of production and the player's ceiling. My weakness is scouting report info. Don't have nearly enough of it...

1. Brett Jackson

2. Trey McNutt

3. Chris Archer

4. Josh Vitters

5. Hak Ju-Lee

6. Jay Jackson

7. Junior Lake

This is where it gets kind of fuzzy for me...

8. Casey Coleman

9. Chris Rusin

10. Rafael Dolis

I don't know enough about Hayden Simpson or Reggie Golden and other draftees or emerging prospects like Su-Min Jung or Jae-Hoon Ha to know how they compare with guys like Chris Carpenter, Dae-Eun Rhee, Brett Wallach, and Robinson Chirinos. If I knew more about Simpson, I might easily rank him 8th. Jung is red hot right now, but I don't have a scouting report on his stuff. Russ Canzler's not that old for his level and he's put together quite a season (.950 OPS at AA), how good is he?
