Not sure this is worth a new thread since it's just a blurb, but I didn't know where else to put it.

According to Jayson Stark:

The Padres have been trying to hone in on a left-field bat. But their three main targets -- David DeJesus, Corey Hart and Werth -- are suddenly either hurt, prohibitively expensive or fading off the market entirely. So the Padres now seem to be shifting toward just adding depth. Among the names linked to them: Ryan Theriot and Jeff Keppinger.

The Pads aren't going to be willing to pay any salary and if they are truly looking at him as depth, won't be sending anything of value back in return.

Money shouldn't be an issue since Theriot's salary this year was only $2.6 mil. An acquiring team would be looking at, probably, a million or less to spend the rest of the season on him. That's not much even for the Padres.

I think we could expect a raw, low-high A, hard throwing pitcher with some upside.

I guess that's better than getting nothing from a non-tender in the off-season, but not much.

That's basically the same thing that they got when they dealt Todd Walker to the Padres.

And honestly, I could see both of them (Theriot and Walker) having similar value across the league. Walker was severely undervalued for some reason (defensive issues primarily, I think) and Theriot, while his value is lower than it was this time last year, is probably the type of player to be overvalued (semi-high average, good perceived speed on the basepaths, "true leadoff" type hitter, etc).

Walker was the better player no doubt, but I think the return could be similar between them.

I'm definitely in favor of getting something. Hendry and the scouts tend to be pretty good at picking out the high upside, flawed guys in the low minors, so that could actually be a nice addition for us.

I guess the best part of trading him would be that it would all but guarantee that he wouldn't be playing for the Cubs next year.

It would definitely eliminate the possibility of offering arbitration.

Don't know if it was mentioned anywhere else, but Bruce Levine said yesterday on AM1000 (WMVP) that he expected Theriot to be the first Cub player traded, and sounded as if it were an almost certainty.

I hated Theriot at the 1 and 2 spot, but a lot of teams could do worse than Ryan Theriot at the 8 spot. This being said, we should get whatever we can for him because a Fontenot/Baker 2B platoon would be far more productive and call up Barney as a backup SS.

They were talking about the Rox acquiring Theriot on the radio here in Denver this morning. They thought it would be Aaron Cook straight up for him. The announcers seemed to think that was a good deal for the Rox but not enough to put them over the top.

I hope the Rox GM feels the same way.

I've always liked Aaron Cook. I'd be ok with this deal.

Unless we'd be planning on flipping him, why would we need Aaron Cook?

His stats have not been good at all, his salary is pretty high, and the last thing the Cubs need is another starting pitcher. I can't see Hendry taking on a guy like Cook in this trade, unless is plan is to flip him to another team.

I just looked at Cook's stats and his salary and it's awful. He's due over $9m next year and he has a 1.5 WHIP. He's really effective against right handers but no so much against lefties. He reminds me of Jon Leiber.

Pass on that one. Maybe they'd give up Seth Smith, doubful but maybe.

That's a lot of salary to take on for another #3 or #4 starter. He would be Lilly's replacement for next year.

Cook is scheduled to start today, so I would think that the Rockies would want to get this done before tonight.

Ugh, ddin't know he was so bad this year. I know he posted some pretty decent years with the Rockies. If he's another overpaid suckass, pass.
