Not really all that stunning. If he'd not had that horrible slump the first half, he'd probably excercize FA, but he probably feels he won't get as much on the market and hopes to have a good year next year for one last payday.

I'd still shop him and see what we can get.

Aramis Ramirez is leaning toward exercising his $14.6MM player option for 2011, based on comments made to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times:

Really....you drew that assumption based on comments he made, and not the fact that he has sucked for 80% of the season? Thank you, Captain Obvious.

i was sort of interested in Beltre given the year he's having, until i realized/noticed he's hit .334/.382/.598 his two contract years

Only if you don't count last year's contract year where had his worst season since he was 19.

and he got hit in the balls with a sharp grounder, making it his worst season ever

Im cool with it. If we could get a healthy, productive Aramis, it could keep that ever so slight crack in our window open for next year, and its not like we have a better option, and even if we did sigh a Beltre or Cantu, wed be throwing similar money at them, and I doubt that they could give us what Aramis could at his best. Besides, maybe he can give us a monster contract year. Now if he does excercise it, then in 2012 theres also the mutual option which is for 16 mil with a 2 mil buyout.

Ramirez is still undecided on whether to return in 2011 for $14.6 million or exercise his escape clause and become a free agent.

"That's going to be after the season," he said. "I don't know exactly when. I haven't talked to my agent about it. That's going to be in the offseason. They've got a lot of other things they have to address. I'm still under contract, so we'll see."

Ramirez said the naming of the new manager won't factor into his decision.

"It doesn't matter," he said. "I don't think a $6 or $7 million manager is going to make any difference. You've still got to have good players. That's the key."

Ramirez said the Cubs will have to address many issues before him.

Seriously? Mr. "I didn't show up for most of the season but now I'm hitting so it's cool."

I'm not one to say that a player owes a team anything. However, after this year, I will actively root against Ramirez if he opts out using that excuse. He certainly didn't have a problem with the players on the team when he signed his big contract in 06.

You mean when he took less so he could stay with the Cubs?

If the Cubs had an out clause on Soriano's contract, do you think they would hesitate to use it? It's a business and there's millions of dollars at stake. If Aramis believes he will be better off as a free agent, he should exercise his option and become one.

Longer term (i.e. 3 to 4 years down the road), I think Aramis opting out may actually be a good thing for the Cubs, as I believe it would force them to the "rebuild from scratch" route.

Of course 2011 could end up being a complete disaster, but that might happen even if he stays.

It would either force them to that route or the "spend huge on FA to salvage a decent season" route. That's what would scare me about Aramis opting out.

I don't understand why this type of thinking is still coming up (contrary to my earlier post above). It's a terrible FA class and the Cubs have nobody on the horizon in their system for years who can serviceably man 3B, plus it's not like this is a contract that bogs them down long term. Aramis opting out causes many more problems than it "fixes."

I don't think he gives a reason for opting out in those quotes. He said he's undecided on whether to opt out or not and then says who the new manager is won't affect his decision because who the players are matters more than who the manager is.

I took his comments to mean that he basically wants to see some improvements made before he commits another year to the Cubs. I'm quite sure he won't get more money than what he'd get from us next year, but if there is a 3rd base job open that he'd like on a team he deems a contender, I could see him taking less money to go there. And I Wwouldn't blame him, because it doesn't really appear as if we're going to be a contender next year and in the Cubs perfect world, Vitters would be their 3B in 2012.

I don't get why people keep writing off 2011. All the Cubs need to do to compete next year are these things:

1. sign Adam Dunn

2. keep fukudome and Zambrano

3. get a typical year from Ramirez

4. find 1 more reliever either through FA, trade or the multitude of in house options.

Items 1 and 3 take them to at least the top 1/3 offensively. The starting pitching is already pretty good. If they get a career year or unexpected production out of somebody they could be very good in a division that is still pretty weak. The young pitching on the Reds will pay for it next season after Dusty runs them into the ground. Houston and Milwaukee stink and don't look to be getting any better.

Why can't Milwaukee get any better? If anything they would be the team that could improve more than us. Braun should bounce back, Escobar is going to get better, and if all we need to do is sign a couple guys they are right there as well with two decent pitching signs.
