How can you earn a spot in semi-competitive exhibition games?

You should know who your five best starting pitchers are going into next ST. Or at least have a darned good idea.

Of course you will have an IDEA of who you think will make it for the most part. But earning it for guys like Wells, Gorz, and even Silva doesn't mean yoiu have to pitch nothing but scoreless innings all spring. It means you come into camp in shape, your pitches look like they should, and you stay healthy during spring. For the youngsters, it's more about results, than it is for the vets. That said, I fully expect Jay Jackson, Thomas Diamond, Chris Carpenter, Chris Archer(who won't be rushed but does have to be added to the 40 man this offseason) and maybe Bibens-Dirkx to all get fair shots at nmaking the rotation next year. And that doesn't even include Cashner, who I ceretainly HOPE gets a chance.

In the end, we've got quite a few guys who have to think they've got a chance to be in our rotation next season.

I'm in denial about Ryno. I just don't see a big market team going with a first time big league manager. With the exception of Bruce Kimm being interim, Hendry tends to go for experience.

Yeah, I didn't see a big market team like the BEARS going with a first time head coach in Mike Ditka. What were they thinking ???

Ditka was an assistant coach for 10 years before getting hired as a Bears coach.

Sandberg has spent exactly zero years doing any kind of major league coaching. I honestly don't know the answer to this, but who was the last major league manager that was hired without ever having been an assistant coach of some kind in the majors?

probably a.j. hinch. i guess trey hillman counts too, although he was a manager in japan.

I did try and find the answer, and Hillman had been the closest I found. Didn't realize that Hinch hadn't been an assistant in the majors.

In any case, I think it's safe to say it's a pretty rare scenario.

Larry Dierker is the success story in that regard. Brenly wasn't a good manager, but he did win a world series without prior experience.

Brenly was a coach under Dusty Baker on the Giants according to his wikipedia page.

I'd rather a guy study under Terry Bevington
