Sorry for the vague title, it's all we have right now.

Phillies close to pulling off a move to bolster rotation and dealing Werth. Buster Olney and Jayson Stark are all over it. Great job guys!

Phils are supposed to be hot on Haren, Oswalt, Shields and Sheets, more or less in that order, as they want a pitcher they control beyond this season.

If they are trading Werth (which is really odd considering that their offense has been struggling and Utley is out for awhile I believe), it has to be for Haren. Those other 3 I don't think I'd give up Werth for.

I assume that in this scenario, the Phillies believe Domonic Brown is ready to come up and produce reasonably close to what Werth was doing.

Some of the pitchers the Phillies weren't talking about, as of early Tuesday evening: Ben Sheets, any of the Rays' pitchers and Dan Haren.

According to Buster Olney's twitter. Looks like Oswalt?

Jeez... Halladay, Hamels, Oswalt are the top 3 in your rotation?

Sure, but it's still a bit of a gamble to throw him in there when they desperately need offense. If they were leading a playoff race instead of 7 games behind ATL in the East, and 3 games behind Cincinnati in the Wild Card, I'd say its a good move where you can afford to give him 2 months to fit in.

But they desperately need to win and win now if they want to make the playoffs.

not really sure why the astros would do this, unless they wanted first crack at signing werth to a long-term deal, or they just want the draft picks they'd get after he leaves.

It'd have to be a 3 team deal.

Phils get pitcher from crappy team.

Mystery team gets Werth.

Crappy team gets prospects from mystery team.

According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said that he is "not close" to a trade.

Rosenthal also reports that the Astros, Diamondbacks and Athletics say they are not close to a deal, three teams conveniently mentioned because of Roy Oswalt, Dan Haren and Ben Sheets, respectively. We should probably get used to conflicting reports over the next couple weeks. Jul. 20 - 11:37 pm et

Buster Olney and Jayson Stark of ESPN.com hear that the Rays are involved in discussions for Phillies' outfielder Jayson Werth.

According to Olney, the Phillies are working "very, very aggressively" to move Werth. Freeing themselves of his contract would allow the Phillies to add more payroll, possibly in the form of Astros' right-hander Roy Oswalt. There are obviously a lot of moving pieces here, but it certainly sounds like talks are going on. Whether a deal actually goes down is another matter altogether.

Would be good for the Rays. Another slugger for the middle of their order and they have plenty of prospects so unloading a few wouldn't crush them.

I could see something like Werth and a prospect/cash to the Rays, Davis, Brignac, Kendrick/Mayberry Jr. to the Astros and Oswalt and either Lindstrom or Lyon to the Phillies.

There's also been a rumor floating around for a week or two that Werth is/was banging Utley's wife.

Pulling a Delonte. Nice.

Negative. Nobody's mom was involved.

Another starter off the market soon. One more good start by Lilly today, and the Cubs should be able sell very high.

It doesn't have to be a 3 team deal. The Astros just want to cut their payroll down for next year, and they owe $16 mil to Oswalt for 2011.

Lilly doesn't want to be traded, therefore he will serve up meatballs today.

Lilly doesnt have a NTC, does he?

In such case, suck it up, Ted. You can go pretty much anywhere after the season.

He has a limited NTC. He can reject trades to 10 teams.

And the only 2 teams who are contenders on his 10 team list are Philly and Cincy. So hes pretty much free game to all the teams who would actually be interested in acquiring him.

He's pulling a Palmerio. That'll get you traded every time, even if you're the best 1st baseman on the team.

Supposedly rumor is untrue as Werth and Utley were recently spotted at the casino together.

As an aside, Utley's wife is smoking hot.
