this is a pretty dumb way to defend a trade.

also, looking at escobar batted ball numbers, there's really no reason to think he isn't due an immediate turnaround, unless he's so lazy that he's intentionally popping the ball up on the infield four times more often than usual so he doesn't have to run hard to first base.

Yeah, I get looking to trade a guy the organization is fed up with, but I don't get trading the guy and a decent young lefty for a 33-year-old mediocre SS having a career year (with a .296 OBP), an intriguing short lefty and a SS in A+ with a .291 wOBA.

The Mark Teixeira trade wasn't that long ago.

Either of them.

Or the Soriano trade

How's Saltalamacchia working out for the Rangers?

Not well, but Neftali Feliz and Elvis Andrus are doing very, very well. Casey Kotchman also has a .670 OPS as a 27-year-old first baseman for the Mariners right now.

Yeah, Salty was the guy most media picked up on and he may have been the #1 target, but Andrus and Feliz are an incredible pair of young players.

Was Wren the one that made this move or was it right before he took over?

That trade happened in July of 2007, and according to BR.com, Wren was promoted to GM 10/11/2007.

Wikipedia says Wren took over after the 2007 season and the Teix deal was made on July 31, 2007 (according to B-R).

Wren took over after the 2007 season, and the Teixeira deal was midseason 2007. I'm sure he had some input, but he wasn't the GM at the time.

Honestly, the trade to acquire Teix wasn't nearly as bad as trading away Teix for Casey Kotchman and Steve Marek. That was a simply abysmal trade and it was Wren's.

If the Teix deal ends up basically being Feliz and Andrus for a year of Teix (and first dibs at re-signing him), that's not an awful trade.

oh, no doubt wren's trade was worse. and the Salty/Andrus/Feliz/etc for Teix deal wasn't "awful" for Atlanta, but that's not really the standard Atlanta set pre-Wren.

It certainly wasn't one of Schuerholz's shining moments. However, if they could have gotten Teix signed long term, it's a decent deal for them. They couldn't, though, which made it a bad trade and one of Schuerholz's worst. It was just piling on, then, that Wren got Kotchman and Marek for Teix a year later.

Man, when the Tex trade was announced, it was perceived as Salty and spare parts. I had no idea Andrus and Feliz were included. They have plans for Feliz to start, right?

I knew Feliz and Andrus were highly rated, but at the time, I thought Salty was the best piece the Rangers got.

The Braves also gave up Matt Harrison who was their #2 prospect before that season started according to Goldstein.

Yeah, he's not done much though. He's 25 and has pitched well in the minors and poorly in the majors (in short stints). Not a bust yet, but not a guy to get real excited about either.

but the point is, he was a valuable commodity when traded. A very valuable one (just like Salty).

At minimum, the Braves gave up 2 highly touted prospects and 2 different guys that turned out to be quality major leaguers (or maybe really good major leaguers). that's a lot.

That's true, he was likely pretty valuable at the time. I was surprised to see them offer that much for Teix, especially considering there was plenty of doubt whether they'd be able to re-sign him.

Feliz and Andrus were really good prospects at the time (4 & 5 according to Goldstein) Andrus was #65 overall (BA) pre-season and up to 19 by next season.
