Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago.com reports that the Rangers have "strong interest" in Xavier Nady.

Nady, a right-handed hitter, could be used in a platoon at first base with Chris Davis. Of course, Nady is still owed a little over $1.6 million (plus incentives) for the rest of the season, so the cost-conscious Rangers will have to find a way to get the Cubs to eat the rest of the salary, possibly by tossing in an extra prospect. How about Saltalawhatshisface who I was almost sure theyd end up moving in the Lee deal. Too bad they arent interested in our Lee. I wonder what kind of prospects we could net from them if we ate the rest of his salary. They could use a 1B.

I know he won't, but if netted anything decent I'd kick in the money. If he was owed $10mil more, that would be different. But for $1.6? Even future trade chips would be worth it.

Salty has really dropped off since going to Texas. His top OPS in the majors since the trade is .716 and he's currently OPSing .753 in 211 PAs in AAA as a 25-year-old.

Salty is currently in AAA for the Rangers. He's hitting well there, but is having major difficulties throwing the ball back to pitcher.

I still don't think the Rangers are ready to give up on him, but with the trade for Molina, he's likely stuck at AAA for the remainder of the season. I don't see a Salty for Nady swap, but if the Cubs tossed back another player, the Rangers might be willing to make the swap.

Saltalamacia is a head case right now who can't even get past his mental block to throw the ball back to the pitcher. Pass.

Hypothetically, if they were to give him up for Nady, it would still be worth it, and maybe stick him in Iowa and try to convert him to 1B.

Get him a Fredrick's of Hollywood catalog and he'll be fine.

I'd be very interested in a Nady for Salty swap and if he's having Ankiel/Glass-esque throwing issues, it might be realistic. He's not the top of the line guy that he was when the Braves dealt him, though.

A move to first base would help his issues, but then the question is can he hit enough.

Looking at his numbers, he would be an offensive liability at 1B unless he really starts hitting.

Yeah, that's what I was getting at. I've always liked his potential, but moreso as a catcher than a 1st baseman. Especially now that he's sporting a minor league OPS south of .800.

Still, you dont think hed be worth Xavier Nady even if we do pick up whatever we still owe him? This is Xavier Nade were talking about.

I'd rather gamble on an upside arm in the lower minors.

I'm not saying don't trade for him - especially if we can get him for Nady. He just isn't as valuable as he was when the Braves traded him.

Like Rob said, I might prefer a high upside arm in the lower minors, but Salty wouldn't be a bad gamble either.

Rangers Continue Search For Right-Handed Bat

By Luke Adams [August 29 at 10:14am CST]

Teams have just two more days to acquire postseason-eligible players, but the Rangers haven't yet given up their search for a right-handed hitter. Richard Durrett of ESPN.com writes that, after missing out on Manny Ramirez, Jon Daniels and the Rangers continue to "work the phones" in hopes of landing a bat.

Our list of players that we know have cleared waivers is noticeably lacking in right-handed options, with switch-hitters Carlos Beltran and Geoff Blum the only healthy possibilities. Durrett, however, lists a few names he thinks may be available, including Ryan Spilborghs, Reed Johnson, Jeff Francoeur, and Marlon Byrd. It's also possible that the Rangers are the unknown team awarded a waiver claim on Mike Napoli, though he would have had to make it past the Tigers and White Sox, among other clubs.

Would be nice to get something for him, even if it's an A ball reliever.

sure it'd be expensive, but i'd love to have put a claim on carlos beltran. 2011 is the last year on his deal, I believe.

He's due $18.5 next year, the final year of his deal. My biggest question would be where to put him. Could he conceivably play first? If not, there's really nowhere to put him since we have Colvin, Byrd, Soriano and Kosuke all in the outfield and Brett Jackson potentially ready to come up sometime in the second half of next year.

Trade Kosuke and make Colvin the 4th OF/backup 1B so he gets 400 ABs if management really thinks he's a legit future player. I have no idea how good/bad Beltran's defensive metrics have been as he's aged and went through injuries, but if he's been a liability you can still move him to right with Byrd staying at center.

Of course, I really want to see him finish this year with much better than a 634 OPS if we're going to pay him 18.5 million to play baseball for us.

That's my main point, we know Kosuke will be good if we just play him and Colvin still has upside to reach. If we had claimed Beltran, we'd have been pretty much forced to get nothing for Kosuke, while paying all his salary (because we'd have no leverage), and put off finding out better what we have in Colvin in the hopes that an old, previously injured Beltran could get back to a .900+ hitter while paying him $18.5 million.

If we had a need in the OF or if the Cubs felt he could transition to first, it might be worth taking a flier on him. But there's really no good place to put him with the crowded outfield without pushing out a likely better option.
