Ive said this before, but if Aramis really does heat up even somewhat, looking at the very weak 2011 Free Agent class, I can almost guarantee that he opts out of the final year of his contract and probably ends up with a 3-4 yearcontractfor his troubles. Intriguing possibility. With him, Lee, and Lilly off the books, thats a lot of money to play with.

And spend on what? Not very much out there.

I still can't see teams offering big money over 3-4 years to him because of his injury history. The Cubs owe him at least $16.6 (with the 2012 buyout), so you're talking at least $50-$60 million over 3-4 years. The mega deals are going to "sure things" (Lee, Mauer, Pujols, Halladay, etc.), not players with a history of injury. Teams are trying to re-sign their own stars and build with young players.

I think it is possible an AL team offers Ramirez 4/50 or possible 3/40. how much is his buy out for 2012? If he feels it is likely the Cubs will buy him out maybe thats enough to make him opt out.

His salary for 2011 is $14.6 million. His 2012 salary is $16 million or his buyout is $2 million. There are five stipulations that make his 2012 salary guaranteed:

* wins one MVP in 2007-11, or

* places 2nd or 3rd in MVP vote twice in 2007-11, or

* wins LCS MVP once in 2007-11, or

* is an All Star 3 times in 2007-11, or

* is traded & Ramirez exercises 2011 option

His NTC is already irrelevant because he has 10/5 rights.

Whoa. I did not know that. I guess Aram is going to be a Cub through next season. That is OK, I suppose. Hopefully Vitters can adjust at AA for the rest of the season. Maybe start out at AA next year, and then get bumped up to AAA in the middle of next season.

Anybody have a view for what's changed for Aramis over the past few games? Bat speed returning, pitch recognition better, something else?

I keep telling everyone he's going to opt out. I still think he does well enough in the second half to be one of the 2-3 premier hitters on the market this offseason.

If he keeps this up, he might.

Easily. The only other decent 3B in the FA market will be Jorge Cantu. Carl Crawford is really the only premium position player FA for 2011, and Aramis could really cash in. The Angels or Phillies could be likely landing spots for him, as they were last time he opted out.

the phillies already have placido polanco and have more than $130 million already committed for next year. there is zero chance the phillies even consider him.

the angels will have some money, but a lot of their young guys are starting to approach big raise territory.

No kidding. I can't believe WSR even considered them; unless they are DRASTICALLY increasing their payroll, they're not paying out for an FA like Aramis. Hell, look at the stupid contract they gave Howard; unless Utley is a moron and/or a saint, he's going to expect to get paid along those lines, too. The Phillies are going to be locking a ton of money in VERY few players within the near future.

lucky for them, utley signed a very team-friendly deal through 2013 (7 years, $85M). they're probably getting like $30M/year of production out of him. but yes, they already have howard and halladay at $20M, utley at $15M, ibanez and lidge at $11.5, rollins and blanton at $8.5M, hamels at $9.5M, polanco at $5.25M and victorino at $7.5M. plus a handful of other guys in the $1-4M range. there's no room there. werth is definitely gone after this season (domonic brown, your table is ready).

if you want a team to worry about, how about the red sox? yes they have a lot of money committed, but lowell's contract is going away. adrian beltre's option is a player option at just $5M, which he's certainly going to turn down after the year he's having. i'm not going to bother figuring out how much the red sox have committed for next year - it's certainly a crap ton - but their payroll this year is $168M, so one would expect they'd have room for another big contract.

Wow, Utley is signed through 2013? I had no idea why I thought his current deal was up after 2011.

Is Howard's current deal through 2014 or 2015?

If Beltre does opt out, I wonder if hed be a possbility to replace Aramis if he opts out. Hes a great defensive player. Cantu is another one. Wed really need a replacement of some kind. Vitters isnt ready, and Marquez Smith is the only other 3B prospect we have, and he aint the guy. I really dont want to go any length of time with a Baker/Font 3B platoon ever again.

What happened to all the posters who were bemoaning the crippling loss of Casey McGehee?

I never lost any sleep over McGehee. Even when he was doing well, it was something that we never would have seen coming judging by his minor league stats. I see it the same way as if Randy Wells stayed with the Blue Jays and did what he did for the Cubs over there. Sure, its a good sucess story for him, but you cant really beat yourself up over a guy who really didnt show much promise with us.

Red Sox have $100 million in 15 players for 2011 according to Cot's.

Cantu will be cheaper, younger and actually has a better career OPS. I'd rather have Cantu myself.

Huh, Cantus only 28. I dont know why I thought he was in his mid 30's. Id personally prefer Beltre for his power and defense, but I wouldnt complain about Cantu. I guess the good thing about Cantu is that he can play 1st as well, so depending on the price, maybe we can bring him on anyway if Aramis stays. Between, Beltre, Cantu, and Aramis, I really hope we have 1 of the 3 at 3rd next year.

If Aramis has every intention to opt out, and the Cubs have no intentions of bringing him back, I kinda hope the Cubs are able to shop him around before the deadline. If he continues to perform like this for the next couple of weeks up to the deadline his trade value might be replenished

cantu is a bad defender; beltre is good or very good.

Aram wasn't a good defender in Pittsburgh, was he? If I recall, that was the one major knock on him when we traded for him.

He had a good glove but tended to throw balls away. Having Lee helped and he has become better with the throws.
