Effect of Zambrano's Tirade

So after the Zambrano/Barrett fight in 2007, I believe the team went 63-47 afterward and make the playoffs. Any chance this gets a shitty team going? We were just 22-30 after the fight in 07 and started winning a nice clip. I don't expect this team to take off, but they obviously need something to get them going. We've now removed our worst starter from the rotation and might need to let Wells spend some time in the minors. We need to get the bats to start rattling, but if anything was going to make or break this team, it might have been yesterday. I expect a major upswing or a ridiculous slide that puts us 20 under.

Honestly, part of me wants to see the team tank so some big salaries can be moved at the deadline (assuming that Hendry can bring in some good prospects - a HUGE if). I just can't see this team going on any kind of run. I bleed cubbie blue and I would love to be wrong.

If Lou does something to get himself ejected and suspended today (as happened the day after Zambrano vs. Barrett) then comparisons to 2007 might be appropriate.

More likely he'll just spew more platitudes and "what do you want me to do"s.

I'm just ready for this team to be done. A little over 2 months til football.

More than any other team, the Cubs draft postion is irrelevant. Wilken will just draft more guys he feels are undervalued. Unless we get the #1 pick and there is a Strasburg type talent, it really won't matter.

For all the talk of Adrian Gonzalez and Fielder, I can see the Cubs going back into the early 2000s mold and acquiring 3rd and 4th tier free agents to fill out the team. Ricketts was at Wrigley in 2003 and you can bet he has realized that the most beloved Cubs team in recent memory was 7th in the NL in payroll. Through a decent farm system and with a couple of overperforming free agents, you can turn a huge profit and still keep the fans coming. Wouldn;t shock me at all.

If they try hard enough, we could get a first round pick or at least top 5 next season!

I would think the Cubs already have a first round pick, since they can't be traded in the MLB.

Hey man! I was on my first cup of coffee!

Good catch though!

The difference is that I really don't see this team improving. I saw the 07 team as just playing below their ability. I don't think Ramirez, Wells, Zambrano, Lee, and Fukudome are going to set the world on fire the rest of the season.
