What on earth...

Trying to kick people is often a bad idea. Nigeria just went from having a great chance to advance to being on shaky ground now that they're down to 10.

i just hate the rule. basically it encourages the greek player to shove the ball into the nigerian player hoping that he retaliates. instigator gets nothing and the retaliation is harshly punished. it's stupid.

You can argue that Kaita started the shoving before the Greek guy put the ball in his chest. Still, a real lack of composure by Kaita(there's no doubt what he's trying to do with that raking motion, and it's deserving of a red), and a huge dive by the Greek guy who never got touched. I hope Greece goes down in flames.

there's another example of a guy who should be given a yellow after the match; he got grazed on the thigh by kaita's boot and went down like he tore his acl. apparently diving is an artform in southern europe. [expletive] greece.

Oh, it was definitely a flop. I don't think Kaita came within 6 inches.

Nigeria had to feel great 45 minutes ago. Playing a poor Greek team and having the tie-breaker advantage over South Korea.

Anyone else see anything about Switzerland's manager crediting Bob Bradley for showing them the gameplan to stopping Spain? Tommy Smyth mentioned it during the Argentina match, and I thought it was interesting.

Question from a noob:

Why do the goalies wear gloves that look like oven mitts?

What does it say about Greece when an 11 v 10 match is far more entertaining and evenly matched than 11 v 11?

that greece sucks.

maybe they can go far in this tourney if they can keep conning refs into giving out red cards.

to help not catch the ball

That...doesn't really make sense, but given it is soccer, I can't tell if you're being serious or not.

I was commenting on all the goalie missplays, including that last goal that the goalie let bounce off both hands, the US goal, etc.

gotcha - but that was why I was asking about the silly looking gloves. Are they supposed to make things easier? If so, what?

Cause it doesn't seem to be working so far

I'm guessing it's padding to prevent a bunch of broken fingers and allow them to punch/slap balls away without harm. And I'm not sure if they have some sort of "grip" like wide receiver gloves in football.

I don't know the answer but I'm assuming part of it is padding (try stopping one of those lightning fast shots without some padding).

Keeper gloves do have some grip to them, but their main function is to keep you with 10 fingers. What you're seeing is at the world class level, most quality shots are struck too hard or with too much movement to attempt to catch. Not to say that there haven't been misplays by the keepers, but catching and holding on to the shots are much more difficult than it seems from a bird's eye view.
