I don't have much faith in us winning if it comes down to PK's.

I don't have faith in any of my teams in PK's. The most important person we have is Howard though.

Just rewatching the match, what did Yahia do to get that second yellow? From what I can tell, he did nothing at all.

team captains get a yellow for team misconduct.

I'm glad sulley asked. I had the same question. No question the team was out of line though....they were unhinged at that point.

If anything, PKs increases my faith in us winning. I mean, if we're playing Brazil/Argentina then I didn't have high hopes to begin with, but PKs shrinks that game and plays up our best strength (goalkeeping). Maybe against a team we're favored against, but after Ghana and maybe Korea, the odds of us seeing one of those are very slim.

I live in a city with an MLS team (Columbus Crew) and can't say I've ever seen their games on TV. What TV deal does MLS have?

I know there's a weekly MLS game on ESPN, and the MLS Cup is on ABC. Fox Soccer Channel also gets a weekly game, and there's an Extra-Innings type package you can order from your provider if you want a bunch of the games.

This year, the Fire have at least 8 on channel 50, 9 on Comcast SportsNet Chicago, 5 on ESPN/2, 6 on Fox Soccer Channel, and 4 on TeleFutura

Just watched the goal again, the ref was laughing as he was picking up the corner flag to put it back after the dogpile.

Yeah -- I saw that on my rewatch of the game as well. I thought he was, and had to go back to double check.

maybe the games are on FSN-Ohio or something. I don't pay much attention to that channel unless baseball is on.

The Crew are pretty popular right now (mostly because they're good, I suppose).

For the fourth consecutive season, the Crew will have all 30 of its regular-season games broadcast on television, with 25 being televised regionally on ONN-TV and 6 airing nationally on ESPN2, Fox Soccer Channel, Fox Sports Espanol and TeleFutura.

Nice giveaway by De Rossi leading to the goal. That made me happy.

We're an hour from both of the finalists from the last World Cup not advancing out of group play.

Jeez, I wasn't talking about you. We got tier guy over there talking about God knows what and all you can think about is that I'm talking about you.

Ha, fine, I'm a narcissist. You quoted me, so I figured you meant me.

maybe i'm just showing some naivete, but if they go to PKs, would it be insanely outlandish to go with Guzan, who seems to perform well when facing a PK?

Yes it would be insanely outlandish. Besides that, you're remembering Guzan in Villa's cup runs? Do you remember Tim winning year before last's FA Cup semifinal vs United in pk's? He's a great penalty stopper himself.

Third tier is catching NBA fast, if they haven't already.

This is something a non-NBA fan would say without knowing what the actual ratings and interest is. Game 7 of the NBA finals was the highest rated summer network television program since Jordan was winning rings. 28.2 million viewers is not even a pipe dream for "third-tier" sports like hocket, soccer, nascar etc.

Right. No one is saying to abandon baseball because soccer exists.

1) I just get a little itchy when the Beatles are dissed in any way (though I don't believe that was wolf's intent).

Yeah I love Miles Davis and the Beatles which is why I used them intentionally. I love baseball, basketball and like football and hockey. Even sports I don't like (NASCAR) I can still appreciate what other people like about them. I'd like people to give that respect to soccer. I don't care if they like it, just don't make me listen to your tiresome, inaccurate ramblings about grass fairies, flopping and boredom.

Where does he go?

I don't think he'll go anywhere until Moyes does. People rarely pay top dollar to acquire keepers who are under contract. He could start for 7 of those team though.

Yes, that soccer's popularity has increased from four years ago. The US television rights to this World Cup went for $425 million, compared to $40 million for 2002 only after the MLS paid so the games weren't only on Spanish language channels (sorry, haven't found 2006 numbers). US, our poster, talked about the increase in MLS attendance. The send-away game for the US drew 55,000 fans (wish I could find the same number for 2006, I'm certain it would be much less). As a nation we purchased more tickets for this World Cup than any country besides South Africa. The Champions League final was televised on broadcast television (Fox) on Saturday afternoon -- bumping the Yankees-Mets game (though the ratings were disappointing -- club soccer has a long way to go here). In 2004, you had to pay-per-view to watch the Euros, in 2008 every game was on ESPN/ABC. The popularity of the sport has empirically increased, and I don't think it's my rose-colored glasses that feels the increase is palpable too.

24,646 against Latvia on May 28

29,745 against Venezuela on May 26

26,141 against Morocco on May 23

I included all three because I figured it was a sendoff tour of sorts.

Thanks. I'd say that's quite the increase, though this year's was a sexier matchup.
