Man I didn't realize Italy going out puts Slovakia on our side of the bracket. So far of the 5 other teams in the bracket, the Netherlands is the only team I'd think the USA has no shot against. Too bad the other 2 teams likely to be on this side of the bracket are Brazil and potentially Spain.

We need Portugal and Spain to win today to keep Brazil and Spain out of our bracket.

Best case scenario: wins from Portugal and Chile, and points from Switzerland.

Ivory Coast gets the first goal, this after a few good scoring chances including a Drogba goal that was rightly called back for offsides.

I'd love if Ivory Coast got a couple more by half just to make this interesting.

Today's thingy, BTW:

GROUP G GP	W	D	L	PTS	GD	GF
 Brazil	2	2	0	0	6	+3	5
 Portugal	2	1	1	0	4	+7	7
 Ivory Coast	2	0	1	1	1	-2	1
 Best Korea	2	0	0	2	0	-8	1

FINAL ROUND: NK vs. CIV, BRA vs. POR
BRA has advanced
NK has advanced, according to the People's Channel.
POR advances with win or tie
POR loss requires CIV loss, tie, or to win on GD (POR has likely advanced unless CIV can also stomp NK and POR gets stomped)
CIV needs a win and a POR loss and to make up the GD (Hahaha good luck)

GROUP H GP	W	D	L	PTS	GD	GF
 Chile 2	2	0	0	6	+2	2
 Spain 2	1	0	1	3	+1	2
 Switzerland	2	1	0	1	3	E	1
 Honduras	2	0	0	2	0	-3	0

FINAL ROUND: SWI vs. HON, CHI vs. SPA,
This one is complicated.
IF: CHI wins, SWI wins: CHI/SWI are in
IF: CHI wins, SWI-HON ties: CHI/SWI advances.
IF: CHI-SPA ties, SWI-HON ties: CHI and SPA are in (SPA def. SWI on GD)
IF: CHI-SPA ties, HON wins: SPA and CHI are in.
IF: SPA wins, they are in (1-0 ties GD, gives SPA the GF adv.) and CHI needs SWI to tie or lose. If SWI wins, CHI and SWI go to GD/GF.
IF: CHI wins, HON wins: SPA, SWI and HON go to GD/GF
HON would have to win by 2 and SPA lose 2-0 to get it to the coin flip (SWI would be out)
If HON won 3-1, and SPA loses 2-0, HON would advance based on GF.

Or in graphical terms:

That was a dive, but Portugal can't be happy with the ref right now. Should be 11 v. 10.

Anyone know the record for the lowest goal differential in the group stage? North Korea currently sits at -10.

I don't understand why they dive on great chances like that. That was an even bigger bitch move than Juan's handball.

How did they even qualify, saber-rattling?

They advanced out of a final group round with South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and UAE with a 3-3-2 record.

They were with South Korea, Jordan, and Turkmenistan in round 3. And their 1st round matches were against Mongolia.

-16 by South Korea in 1954, and they only played two games also. Lost to Hungary 9-0 and Turkey 7-0. They avoided eventual champion West Germany, which scored 25 goals in 6 games so they likely would have been over 20. The 16 goals are also the most allowed in a World Cup.

EDIT: Which is the foul that Brazil should have been red carded for. I've been paying more attention to the other game.

That little bitch Juan plucked a very nice ball out of the air that was meant for ronaldo with no one back.

Flagrant hand ball on a breakaway. Perhaps not a true "obvious" scoring opportunity, but it sure looked like it would have been a great chance had the ball been allowed to go through.

Where's the spray can? Just need a spray from the magical can and the goalie will be fine.

I'm pretty sure there's not a place on the field Ronaldo doesn't think he can score from on a free kick.

"80 yards out? [expletive] it, I'm going for goal."

"Is that Berrian? I think he’s triple-covered. You know what? [expletive] it. I’m throwing it downfield."

Is that Favre or Grossman? Both probably.

Thank you for reminding me about that. I'm going to go back and read that now.

Apparently not losing was more important to Portugal than avoiding a potential semifinals match against Argentina (instead of US/Ghana/South Korea/Uruguay).

Seems like six of one, half dozen of the other.

On one hand they get Paraguay-Japan in the quarters followed by one of Germany-England-Argentina-Mexico in the semis.

On the other than, they would get Netherlands in the quarters but USA-Ghana-South Korea-Uruguay in the semis.

So Portugal was looking at one tough match and one easier match in both scenarios.

Although facing the winner of Paraguay-Japan has to be an improvement over facing the Netherlands in the quarterfinals isn't it?

Obviously if Spain wins the group today then Portugal will wish they had tried a little harder against Brazil. But if they avoid Spain somehow that lower right quadrant seems to be a very good place.
