Comparing it to a safe/out baseball call misses the point. The foul was called on Bocanegra, who was wrapped up with a defender. It's a subjective call. It's like demanding an explanation to a holding penalty that negates a game winning touchdown.

did the ref say that it was a foul on bocanegra? it would be like a ref calling a holding penalty on a game-winning touchdown and refusing to name what kind of call it was until he got an opportunity to watch the film.

That's what the official word was, it's not from the ref's mouth. I don't know why he didn't tell the players on the field, my first instinct is that the language barrier was the big reason. That in itself is not a terribly uncommon situation.

yeah but if it was a language barrier, how come they didn't have any problems understanding his other calls? and if that were the case, you'd think fifa would want their refs to be able to understand a semblance of english, or at least be able to express who a penalty is on (pointing) and what it is (another hand gesture). that's essentially what basketball referees do without even saying anything.

i don't buy the sosa defense.

I didn't get to see the whole game, but were there other calls where they hounded him for an explanation? Referees are used to calling games with languages they don't know, there isn't a ton of verbal interaction on the field.

he didn't even name a player, though, no pointing, he should at least be able to do that, it's kind of universal. besides, this wasn't a normal call, it was a call to disallow the go-ahead goal in the final 5 minutes. he can't give an explanation in the form of a point and gesture?

i know you're just defending international soccer and in the process playing the devil's advocate, but there's absolutely no good foothold anywhere for a defense of this call.

Elimination things for the third round (So far)

GROUP A GP	W	D	L	PTS	GD	GF
 Uruguay	2	1	1	0	4	+3	3
 Mexico	2	1	1	0	4	+2	3
 France	2	0	1	1	1	-2	0
 South Africa	2	0	1	1	1	-3	1

Final Round: MEX vs. URU, FR vs. RSA

MEX vs URU: Either team wins, that team advances. Tie advances both.
FRA Vs RSA: Tie eliminates both.
Both teams need to Win:
FR:
Must win by 3 with Mexico losing by 2 (GD +1 to 0)
Or win by 4 with URU losing by 3
RSA:
Must win by 4 with Mexico losing by 2 (GD +1 to 0)
Or win by 5 with URU losing by 3

GROUP B GP	W	D	L	PTS	GD	GF
 Argentina	2	2	0	0	6	+4	5
 South Korea	2	1	0	1	3	-1	3
 Greece	2	1	0	1	3	-1	2
 Nigeria	2	0	0	2	0	-2	1
FINAL ROUND: ARG vs. GRE, SK vs. NIG
ARG Wins/ties and is in, is essentially in due to Goal Diff.
If GRE and SK win, goes to Goals
If SK/GRE wins and GRE/SK loses/ties, SK is in.
IF SK and GRE tie, goals.

I made an error or two and am changing a few things, but right now I'm going out to dinner.

LOL at the thought of France having to score 3 goals.

France is only there because of lousy refereeing in the first place.

I have to feel that both Mexico and Uruguay will try to win, because neither wants any part of Argentina.

Anyone who counts English among their three spoken languages and is a long time soccer vet would easily be able to communicate the nature of a penalty to an American team.

I have it on good authority that Coulibaly was asked in both English and French what the call was on the field.

French is one of his fluent languages. And he still refused.

I've watched that portion of the game a hundred times, and Coulibaly was going to call a foul on the play no matter what. He had the whistle in his mouth before Donovan was given the go ahead to kick it. Not sure if he was issuing a makeup call for a weak free kick call, or if he just decided the USA shouldn't win this game, but he was going to call a foul. The whistle blew before Edu touched it.

Yeah, the whistle blew while the ball was on its way in, he was planning on making a call the entire time. It was just a coincidence that the ball got put in. If it had been cleared out, the players would have thrown their hands in the air and said "what the hell" and then play would have continued like normal.

He was utilizing "defensive refereeing" on nearly ever set piece in the second half. His incompetence is simply staggering. What's funny is that on Torres' free kick in the 1st half he was trying to stop some of the pushing and shirt pulling prior to the restart. He didn't do that in the 2nd. He didn't even mark off the 10 yards on the free kick we had after Jozy got tackled in the open field right on the edge of the 18. The ref was totally out of his depth.

In the end, though, whatever. It comes down to 90 minutes on Wednesday. We know that no matter what happens, we aren't going to go down without a massive fightback. This team has that extra quality about it. If we can win Wednesday, anything can happen after that.

This team has been the most fun to watch over the past two years than at any other time. I don't expect it to end in 4 days.

Definitely. It seems like every time we need to get a win or specific result in a winnable game, we do it.

Needed to beat Egypt at least 3-0 to have a chance in the Confedertation's Cup and got it done.

After losing to Mexico in qualifying, the absolutely needed wins over El Salvador and Trinidad and Tobago and got those also, then beat Honduras on the road to clinch so they didn't have to worry about getting something against Costa Rica.

Hopefully that continues on Wednesday.

This shouldn't really come as a surprise. FIFA tries to "diversify" the referees by origins in the WC, but given the stakes and the number of people watching, they should just use the semi-professional refereeing teams that are used for officiating high-pressure international games in Europe and South-America.

They too will get wrong calls occasionally, but it won't turn in to a PR disaster like this one.

Reckless waving of the arms by the New Zealand defender. All Italy had to do was strike it on goal at close range and they'd probably get a penalty.

Italy are in all out dive mode, reminding me of why I generally loathe Italian football.

CONCACAF's best ref, Carlos Batres, should be used to it, though.

Italy looking to get a Kiwi sent off for elbow use.

We're in for an acting performance by the Azzurri

At least the NZ goal forces them to play forward.
