Hey, O_O, you know who always struck me as a possible Tim Wilken pick (for the draft you are doing)? Jarrett Parker. Has struggled a bit this year, but has gotten better with the bat as the season progressed. But good athlete, projects very well to CF. With Brett likely in AA or AAA, I could see them adding a top of the order CF with a bit of pop, a poor man's Brett Jackson in some respects, in the 2nd-4th rounds.

Heck, most of UVA's team screams like possible Wilken picks, with the athleticism of that squad.

Both Parkers seem like Wilken picks.

I actually asked Andy Seiler about Austin Wates, Jarrett Parker, and Kyle Parker last week. Here's what he said:

1. Wates hasn’t played center field, but he’s projected to go there. Plus athleticism and speed, solid arm, average power projection, above-average hit tool. Total package, especially for a college player. Just worries about transitioning him to center, since he hasn’t played there.

2. Had disappointing early part of the season, has emerged again. Above-average power and speed, the rest is pretty much average for a center fielder. Still, plus tools for a college player. Strikes out a lot, and will continue to do so.

3. More of a right fielder, has average hit tool, plus power projection, average arm and fielding, around average speed. When I saw him, he looked like a mistake hitter, and other scouts have confirmed that to me. Feasts on mistake pitches, can’t hit the breaking ball down.

Ryan LaMarre is another name I've been considering. I wouldn't be surprise to see any (or all!) of those four guys getting enough helium to make them viable possibilities with the #16 pick, especially considering this is not a very good year for top college position players.

Hey O_O, what's the link to your draft?

It's a Community Mock Draft over on Minor League Ball (John Sickels' blog) and I'm picking for the Cubs in the first three rounds. At the moment, I'm still in the spit-balling phase, although I have a few ideas for my picks.

I'm keeping a Mock Organization Diary. Here are the first two I've done:

MOD #1

MOD #2

I'll edit new content, thoughts, polls, and rumors into MOD #2 from here on out.

John Mincone is red hot down in extended; he's probably going to be the ace of Boise's rotation if he doesn't get called up to Peoria first. Marcus Hatley threw 1.1 innings as he continues to rehab from Tommy John.

And in the comments:

AZ Phil - Do you see anything in Wes Darvill? Blair Springfield too. Any hope for these guys?

==========================================

QUIET MAN: Wes Darvill turned 18 post-2009 and is still very raw, but he has good plate discipline and he runs OK. I doubt that he can stay at SS, though, because he has a below-average arm. His hitting needs a LOT of work. He seems like more of a long-shot than what you would want in a 5th round pick.

I don't know what the Cubs saw in Blair Springfield to make him a 7th round pick. He has below-average speed, a below-average arm, and is a defensive liability no matter where he plays (and he still has not found a permanent position). He shows good power in BP, but he's overmatched in games. Other than the HR potential (and it's strictly potential), there is not much there.

Anyone know why McNutt was pulled after 4.2? He gave up 1 ER on 1 H and 3 BB with 4 K.

In other news, we have a lot of guys having good games including Vitters 2-3 2B, Burke Grand Slam(thats 9 RBI in the past 2 games), Campana 3-3 w/2 2B, B Jax 1 HR, Wellington Castillo with a Grand Slam, Coleman 5 IP 1ER 3 BB 5 K, Barney 2-4.

Peoria's defense is making damn sure their game won't end tonight.

ETA: Aaaaaaaand Peoria finally wins it after scoring 4 runs in the 15th, although they did give up another run in the bottom half of the 15th and ended the game by striking out the tying run with men on 2nd and 3rd. Yeesh, crazy game that clocked in at a little over 5 hours.

What's the story on Campana? Having a big year in AA.

The guy hasn't stopped hitting since day 1. This being said, he strikes me as being Sam Fuld II. If he were in an organization like the Royals or Pirates, he might have a shot, but with The Cubs, I don't see it

I think Campana is more a minor league version of Juan Pierre. Fuld, IMO, has a tiny bit more pop than him and has a better arm (I think).

I realize I'm getting a little ahead, but who's due to start Friday for Iowa? I'm taking the boys to that game, our 4th of the year.

Mitch Atkins.

Vitters is off to a hell of a start in AA, .361/.361/.556

Anyone think Pablo Sandoval is a decent comp for Vitters? Doesn't walk much but has very good contact skills and above average power?

I've seen him compared to Sandoval, but I don't think that's a good comparison. I think he compares more to a Howie Kendrick or Freddy Sanchez with more power.

Very solid day in the minors. Glad to see Vitters off to a very solid start in Tennessee and happy Brett finally hit a dinger. I'm guessing he'll be moved up fairly soon anyway.

Hope Burke can translate this into a prolonged hot streak. Glad to see Lee starting to hit down in Peoria, although the article on him the other day was enough to keep me extremely happy about him. Raley's control issues were something I didn't expect honestly.

As for the unsung crowd of Campana, Coleman, and Barney: I agree that Campana probably will never get a shot with us. Probably not even as a 4th OFer type. If anything, maybe he's a 5th OFer/pinch runner and gets some time once the rosters are expanded in a future playoff push? If not, my guess is we trade him off to a small market team, where he MAY get a shot at some point.

Darwin Barney is a guy that when we inevitably trade him, I hope we at least get something fairly useful for. I see him having a long major league career. He's definitely not flashy and may or may not ever be a true starter for anyone, but he at least has the ability to put together a few "Theriot" years as well. Just won't be for us obviously.

Finally, Casey Coleman has done nothing since we drafted him, other than pitch very solidly. I think the Cubs are probably HIGHER on him than what we would assume, based on BA rankings and other lists. I definitely agree with BA on him, which said there's a very high chance he reaches his upside as a 4/5 starter.

Could he not start putting together some Theriot years for the Cubs starting next year as a replacement for Theriot? If it saves a few million, why not?

Camp seems more Theriotesque than Barney. Can play SS or 2nd, has a little experience in CF, has no power but hits lots of singles.
