Diamondbacks released RHP Bob Howry.

Not a great showing from the right-handed setup man in Arizona. Howry inked a one-year, $2 million contract this offseason -- and will probably get to keep all of it -- but allowed a ridiculous 17 earned runs in 20 1/3 innings for the Diamondbacks this season. He packed his things Monday. Still, we'd bet that his 1.15 WHIP from last year will land him a shot elsewhere.

Comcast SportsNet has learned that the Cubs have signed veteran relief pitcher Bob Howry. He will report to the team in Texas this weekend. Howry was released by the Diamondbacks earlier this week.

They are haggling over the no trade clause. Howry doesn't want one, but Hendry is insisting he take it.

If we must sign one of our old relieivers rather than give the job to one of our own guys like Jackson, Stevens, or Parker, why not Chad Gaudin, who at least has some shred of potential left as opposed to Bullet Bob whose just old and bad. This organization just enrages me at times.

Cubs Interested In Bob Howry

The Cubs are interested in signing recently-released right-hander Bob Howry, according to Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune. Earlier in the week, the D'Backs released Howry, who used to set-up for the Cubs.

 

Cubs GM Jim Hendry has said that he's on the lookout for right-handed relief, and he has many options to consider, though the trade market has yet to fully develop. If the Cubs add Howry, it would be as a middle reliever, not a setup man.

 

MLBTR has Hendry as being interested, but nothing is iminent. Hopefully, it stays that way.

As long as it a non-guarantee contract, and Bullet Bob remains in low pressure situations, I don't mind signing Howry. If this move counters the Jeff Stevens move, then it will suck.

 

People are precondition to criticize any and all Hendry moves, aren't ya'll. If he continues to suck, the Cubs will cut him, no losses. So what's the big deal?

Yeah, I really don't see it as the end of the world. Howry hasn't been very good at all this year, but he actually put together a decent season with the Giants last year that was reasonably comparable to his first two years with the Cubs. If he continues to stink I doubt you see him much with the Cubs.

Hey, if they want to sign him to a minor league deal or use him in mop up duty or whatever, fine. I'm just worried about Lou going to him in key situations. I mean, there is a history there.
