Soriano is on pace for 40 HR and 113 RBIs ha.

You know whats funny though:

Through 80 ABs...

2009: .313/.396/.650/1.046, 10 BB, 6 2B, 7 HR, 14 RBI

2010: .325/.382/.675/1.057, 8 BB, 8 2B, 6 HR, 17 RBI

Very similar starts. Hopefully this year he can stay healthy, so that he doesn't go on a season long slump from June on. Obviously Soriano is not going to change. He will come off this hot streak, and fade into a really frustrating cold spell. The hope for Soriano is that he can limit the length of that cold spell and play well enough to have good numbers at the end of the season.

My hope is, when Soriano eventually cools off, Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez get hot. However, for now, I will happily enjoy watching Good Soriano while he's around.

I'm hoping Soriano, Geo & Fukudome will all have an ops over 1.000 when the season ends just to frustrate the haters. :)

This year, when Soriano does start to hit a slump, the Cubs have 2 capable backups (at least for now) in Colvin and Nady. I expect Nady to hit and Colvin has been doing well. With these two on the roster, the Cubs won't have to keep Alf in the lineup day after day while he struggles out of a slump.

A little depth is always nice!

i would be so over cubs fans if i were him right now, though.

why? he gets paid and assload and hasn't come close to living up to it. I don't fault him for signing that contract. But when you do, you better understand the expectations that come with it. I don't want to hear you complain about the boos when you turn in a sub-.800 OPS, injury or not. Comes with the territory.

I guess it all depends on which side of the fence you are on with regards to when it is proper to boo a player. Some people believe it is acceptable to boo a player for sucking, even if he's working his ass off every day and just can't seem to play better. Others believe its only proper to boo when it's obvious the player is giving less than 100%. By all accounts, Soriano works as hard or harder than any player on the Cubs. Despite the perception of him not caring, it's obvious he does care and wants to play well and wants to win. Yeah sometimes he'll stare at a ball that hits off the wall, but anything else he does it not a result of lack of effort or preparation, it's due to just not being good, or not yet finding the thing that's gonna get him back on track. At this point in his career Soriano is what he is, and has been for years. He's a power hitter that is extremely streaky, has trouble hitting breaking pitches, is probably a little too easy to get out in key ABs when he's not red hot, a butcher in the field, great arm, declining speed, etc. That information was blatently obvious years before Hendry signed him to that deal. If he didn't realize that was the player he was getting, then Hendry should be the one getting booed. Just my opinion though, I have no problem if someone wants to boo him for playing shitty, that's your choice. I just don't think it helps anyone.

why boo him for not meeting unreasonable expectations? what was he supposed to do? "thanks for the 136 mil offer jim, but i don't think i could possible be good enough to make that contract good. i'd prefer you make me a lower offer"

Soriano career- .279/.327/.511

Soriano w/ Cubs- .276/.330/.512

And those Cubs numbers are brought down heavily by a season in which he was hurt.... an injury that is looking more and more likely to have caused his poor performance.

Soriano has been very good in his time with the Cubs. He's done as much as you could have reasonably expected/hoped for when he signed the contrct.

Booing him because he took a big contract is pretty stupid to me. Yeah it "comes with the territory" and it's hard to feel bad about a guy getting booed when he's making that much money, but what does that have to do with it?

Just because you have a right to boo doesn't make it any less meatballish. You have the right to heckle players too, but that doesn't mean you aren't obnoxious when you do it.

Oh, and don't act like the boos were only there when he was OPSing under .800 last season. They were there in 2007 and 2008 when he was having 2 of the best seasons of his career, and when he goes into a slump this year they'll be there again.

People just lovvvvve to hate Soriano, even when he's producing.

Is there another player in baseball quite like Fonz? I knew there are a lot of players out there who are very streaky, but Fonz can be absolutely worthless for weeks at a time, and then out of nowhere, he goes out of his ever loving mind and hit the tar out of everything he sees. Ive never seen a player who goes by such extremes as Fonz. KInd of like Super Mario when he gets ahold of his mushroom.

oh great now everyone is using the term "meatball"

sorry if you're upset with me using one of your cool words you think is original. how about we make deal where i don't use "meatball", and you don't use "awesome". that's my word and i'm afraid of it catching on.

His strike outs seem to be down this season (mainly because he doesn't seem to swing at horrible pitches right now), and that's a reason to believe he might have a GREAT season to me.

I'm loving this Soriano hot streak. Hopefully he can keep it going for awhile and carry the Cubs through the next couple weeks before his inevitable cool down.

On the negative side, it was another poor outing from Grabow today. I'm all for improving the bullpen, but the more they struggle the more I fear that Hendry is going to grossly overpay in prospects to get another mediocre veteran.

I think meatball was a Sulley creation, but I could be wrong.

Boers & Bernstein have been using that term for years, but I couldn't tell you whether it started here first.

Well then I suppose what I mean is that Sulley was the one to start using it on this board. I'm sure B&B's usage didn't originate from here.

It's just relieving that he's showing signs of life after being written off for dead last season.
