Good hitters day thus far:

Castro - 2 for 4 with a double and CS

Jackson - 0 for 0 with 2 walks

Vitters - 2 for 2 with a HR

Burke - 1 for 2 with a double

It's nice to see Su-Min Jung start off so well. His peripheral stats aren't too special, but no runs in 12 IP as of this moment. I'm also excited to see 10 SB's (only 2 CS) from Jose Valdez already - someone said he's our fastest player and it's hard to argue with those results!

Vitters hits them in bunches!

Lovin Jackson's plate approach... The Castro guy might be pretty good

That's no earned runs for Jung so far, 5 unearned, but for a 20 year old, first time in the Midwest league, he's doing just fine.

Valdez definitely has the speed. What he lacks, almost completely, is power. He's 22 and a little old for his level. He needs to start showing it pretty soon. He's 6'1". His frame should be able to add more muscle. Maybe they should get him on Colvin's program...

Jackson and Vitters both went 1 for 2 in their last 2 ABs, with Vitters adding another HR. Vitters has raised his OPS by at least 150 points tonight.

Castro keeps on rollin'.

1/2 with a BB so far in game 2 of the double header.

That is the best part.

Posted (edited)

Castro 4-7 in the double header and boosted his average to .404

Very good day overall down on the farm.

Brad Snyder stays hot, 3-4 with a 2B and 2RBI. However, Ive learned my lesson on AAAA guys in their late 20's no matter how hot they get.

The walk was too boring for him so he doubled in his next AB.

With all of the Castro hype, there are a lot of Smokies quietly having some pretty good seasons. Tony Campana, Steve Clevenger, Tony Thomas, and Brandon Guyer are all doing pretty well for themselves. Do any of these guys have major league futures? I know Thomas had a good start last year, and Clevenger ended up in Iowa toward the end. How about Guyer? A lot of these guys are turning 24 and 25, which is abit old for AAers. Im thinking it might be time to clean house of a lot of the AAAAers in Iowa and give some of these guys a chance. Not that it matters because wed just end up ignoring them and signing more Chad Tracys, Koyie Hills, and Aaron Miles while they rot away and become AAAAers as well.

I'm sensing a Vitters explosion coming...

And on Castro, when's the super 2 deadline? This is getting ridiculous.

It's already passed, it was either earlier this week or last week.

My honest guess is Clevenger could wind up as a backup catcher/utility guy. I was pretty excited about Thomas when we drafted him, but we've got so many middle infielders at this point, my thinking is his only shot is we send him out as a throw in, in a trade. Even then, his glove could keep him from ever getting to the majors. Campana seems like a guy that every organization has at least one of. But, if a team values the "grit factor", then he'll get a shot at some point. I'd say his ceiling is a 5th OFer though. Guyer is the one guy you've mentioned that has some potential though. If he can hit for some power and keep his K's down, he could turn into something fairly decent. I had at some point over the offseason that the Cubs were going to try and get him some work at 2B and 3B, to try to turn him into a utility guy. If he can do that, he'd be competing with Flaherty and probably LeMahieu for that potential spot on our major league team, by 2012 or so. With the way his season is going right now, it's got me hopeful anyway for him......

As far as Castro goes though, it's awesome to see. I think that the super 2 deadline is mid-May or so. Whenever it is, I think we need to give him the SS job the day it passes. I was not sold on bringing him up, but damn......The major league team sucks and he sure as hell is doing everything in his power to make it up there as quickly as possible......

Great to see Vitters and B Jax doing well in Daytona too. I doubt either of them spend half a season there before getting promoted to Tennessee.

Nice to see Jung start off in Peoria solidly too. I'd really love to hear a report on his stuff from Nate, or anyone else who has seen him pitch this year.

I know a bunch of us have said it, but damn, it sure is nice to have these guys to follow, considering how bad the major league team appears to be. :D

Was that the super 2? I know that you get the extra season of team control as of a few days ago. But, I think the super 2 deadline is still yet to come......

Could be right, I might have confused the two. The Mets announcers were talking about it with Davis, just might be the extra team control season has timeline has passed.

After doing some research, there is no hard and fast cutoff for Super 2's as far as service time. Here's the breakdown:

To qualify, a player must:

have at least 2 years of service, but less than 3, and;

have accumulated at least 86 days of service in the previous year, and;

rank in the top 17% of all 2-year players in service time.

The cutoff point generally falls between 2 years, 128 days of service and 2 years, 140 days. So to be safe, if you are looking to avoid your playing becoming eligible for Super 2 arbitration, he shouldn't be called up until very late May or June 1st.

Posted

Yeah, I was just reading MLBTraderumors and there was a blurb on Justin Smoak, who got called up today and one on Carlos Santana as well. They said if Smoak stayed up, he'd qualify and were wondering if the Indians would delay Santana's callup until June to miss out on it......

I can see why it's getting later and later too, because teams are being thrifty and trying to stave off paying these guys as long as possible, keeping down as many guys as they can for as long as they can. I'd figure it's mostly your small market teams contributing to this, but seeing how the Cubs aren't exactly looking like contenders, I definitely see the logic of keeping Castro down as long as possible from that standpoint anyway.

Josh Vitters's last 10 games: .333/.400/.611 in 36 ABs with 4 doubles, 2 HRs, 7 RBI, 4 walks against 6 Ks. Oh, and he's 2-for-2 in stolen base attempts.

Brett Jackson's last 10 games: .368/.467/.526 in 38 ABs with 2 doubles, 2 triples, with 7 walks against 5 strikeouts.

Kyler Burke's last 10 ga-- no...better not. Instead--

Starlin Castro's last 10 games: .386/.404/.614 in 44 ABs with 5 doubles, 1 triple and 1 HR and 9 RBI. He has a 9 game hitting streak going in which every game has been a multi-hit game but one and he's hitting .436. He also has a 6 game multi-hit hitting streak in which he's hitting .500.

Meh, I need to see more...
