With Houston possibly selling what about Lyons or Lindstrom? Lyons never seems to have spectacular stuff but 4 out of the last 5 years has gotten the job done.

Maybe try to re-acquire wuertz if the A's get into a selling position? Do we have any more AAAA prospects we can give to Beane? How about Shark and Micah!? (joke)

Brandon Lyon's 3 yr $15 million contract is one of the few in all of baseball that is worse than Grabow's.

Our divisions pretty awful guys, it isn't going to take a powerhouse to sneak into the playoffs.

Very true, I just have little to no interest in limping into the playoffs and getting swept in three games again. To me, that winds up being about as fulfilling as having missed the playoffs by a few games.

Go big or go home, as they say.

I have a lot of interest in limping into the playoffs. It means we have a 1 and 8 chance of winning the World Series.

And a 100% chance of being in the playoffs, which is always better than not.

it doesn't mean that at all, it means there are 8 teams in the playoffs. the better teams have a better chance of winning the world series.

I admit I'd rather see us as sellers, because I don't THINK we'll make the playoffs. That said, I agree COMPLETELY with the 1 in 8 rule once you get there. The Cards won 83 games and got hot at the right time and we all know what happened. The White Sox were playing pathetic baseball, almost blew a huge lead in their division and we all know what happened once they got there. And on the flip side, we had as good a team as any in 2008 arguably and couldn't win a game.

The degree to which that is true is probably smaller than you think.

It's considerably higher than the supposed everybody has an equal chance crowd thinks.

Interesting. What would the low end odds of winning the WS in an 8 team field be? 1 in 64? What if they made the 1st round best of 7?

i don't know for sure, but i'd guess that under the current format, the worst team in the playoffs usually has about a 1 in 16 chance of winning and the best team is about 1 in 4. it depends how those teams are built too - good defense, strong frontline starting pitching and good bullpens have a pretty good correlation with winning in the postseason, so a team like the yankees last year would have even a better chance of winning because they were good on all those accounts last year.

I could not disagree more. As the White Sox in 2005 and Cards in 2006 proved, no one "limps" into the playoffs.

That just proves that occasionally a team that backs into the playoffs can go all the way. But more often than not, the weak teams are going to get bounced.

I don't think anyone was implying that it was likely.

We are not in a position to look at the possibility of postseason play and say, "nah." Really, what team is?

I was just disagreeing with the notion that 2 unlikely WS champs means no one limps into the playoffs.
