1) Misses that I didn't say 60% balls-in-play rate is bad. I said you have to miss bats. Zambrano allowed a fair ball to be hit by 7 of the 8 batters he faced in that inning that he didn't walk. Any pitcher who strikes out 1 out of 8 non-walks will be ineffective.

Of course, he strikes out the next guy, he's right at the league average. Sample size issue here, just as it is with anything on the first game of the year. Plus, all balls in play are not created equal. Yes, all balls in play give fielders a chance to make mistakes, but not all at the same rate.

So Erik do you get incredibly drunk before each game? You are acting like one of those drunk bleacher bums that are way over the top and give the bleachers a bad rap.

Agreed. So let's normalize his balls-in-play luck. Even if you credit him with outs for 5 of the 6 balls in play, it was *still* bad pitching. That'd be 5 in-play outs, a strikeout, a hit, two walks and a home run. That's bad.

Sample size matters if you are projecting or trying to find a true underlying talent. We aren't. We are trying to find out how good Carlos Zambrano pitched today. And of that, we have our sample is 100% of the possible sample.

Love the shot of the Ricketts Brothers grimly surveying the nightmare they have taken on.

I'd still take them off their hands for about 5 grand. They gotta keep Theriot though.

I rarely drink, actually. I'm pretty mellow in my day-to-day life but the Cubs just piss me off unreasonably. I used to be the eternal optimist when I was a kid: The Cubs could be 39 out with 40 left to play and I'd think they'd still have a chance.

They're like the screw-up family member: You've long since stopped expecting anything at all from them, but you still love them and will never leave.

Ballgame. I'm out.

This is why I need to stop looking forward to things. It always ends in disappointment. If I think bad things will happen, then I don't get pissed off when they do, and if they don't it's a nice surprise.

Ok, who had page 19 of the opening day game thread in the "When will Erik call BALLGAME first" derby?

Do you think the Cubs will win this game, IMB? Because if you do I'd like to wager one month of BAN on it.

But you're a little man who never backs up anything he says so you won't take me up on it.

What does he need to back up?

His crazy theory that today's game did not end in the second inning

I sure hope Marshall gets a real chance sometime, before he's in his 30s.

Why he hasn't yet, I'll never know. He sure deserves more than what he's gotten.

I hate IMB so I'm trying to back erik up by finding that post where he said the Cubs would win this game.
