Believe it or not, I found a new name to toss into the Oklahoma coach search derby.

 

Bruce Weber.

 

A source confirmed Wednesday night that there appears to be mutual interest between OU and the 8-year Illinois coach. It's making a few rounds in the coach carousel industry.

 

that would be an odd career move for him, imo.

Can't wait to see him piss all over the 2001 Final Four stuff in Norman.

I don't hate Gottlieb like the rest of the planet, but I'm pretty sure the Champaign beat writer would know better who has talked to Weber than Gottlieb.

An OU co-worker sent me an e-mail with the info below supposedly from an OU "insider" site.

 

Talked to three different people today who all had the same story about how this coaching search has gone down. One of the sources definitely knows the ins and outs, while the others seem to be close enough to the situation. It all checked out after talking to everyone.

 

Here's the anatomy of the search:

 

* Joe Castiglione targeted Buzz Williams from the very beginning. Before he termined Capel, Joe felt he had a deal in place that would land him Buzz Williams according to multiple sources. He was certain that Capel would be out and Williams would take over.

 

* Then Williams made it to the Sweet 16 and everything changed. I'm also told by one source that Buzz's family was on board with him leaving Marquette and taking over the OU program. But when the Sweet 16 happened, Marquette did everything they needed to do to secure him and keep him.

 

* It was a devastating blow for Castiglione. OU never put out another offer after that. The Pastner offer was never there. There was no offer to Gillespie in the beginning either. I'm told Joe wanted Gillispie, but he couldn't get the support on President Boren to make the hire.

 

* I don't know how far it went, but OU could never get involved with other candidates. The NCAA stuff hanging over this program, the fan support, the other openings that were out there meant that OU couldn't even get some candidates to discuss the job enough to put an offer out there.

 

* Weber was identified as someone who was looking to make a move and would be interested in the OU program. I'm told these talks are just underway and probably started yesterday. I haven't had a chance to hit up our Illinois site publisher to see exactly where Weber's status is with Illinois. But the word around the basketball community is that Weber wasn't going to get an extension at Illinois and he was about to work out his contract and be shown the door.

 

* Weber never had the full support of the fans after Bill Self and I don't get the impression that most Illini fans will be too broken up if he takes the OU job.

 

* It looks like this will continue to progress. I think Weber sees this as a good way to get out of a situation that is only getting worse. I can't see anyway he doesn't take the OU job if they are offering and numerous sources are saying OU is offering him the job.

I think you are really underestimating how much Self hates Weber.

I don't eihter, but I think if they are in conference Bill will run it up versus him a lot. And he will be able to early on, OU is really bad right now.

Sports Information Director says Weber will stay, announcement later today.

 

I never bought it to begin with and I'm not sure our current budgetary concerns would allow us to make the hire I'd want anyway. I just really hope this didn't get him an extension/raise, because he certainly doesn't deserve one for the last 2 seasons.

this is getting serious, if true. and i sort of hope it's true.

 

i don't like the idea of guenther hiring the next head coach though. there's simply no time to get a new ad in place first.

He did the interview too where he said he was 2-0 against Self. Even though they were 1-1 at that point. Weber kind of claimed he outcoached Bill, that and the funeral.

Self's southern charm won them all over, and they weren't going to like the dorky Purdue guy coming in to replace him.
