Purdue's fans in Mackey have to be among the most annoying in the country. Every single foul (or no call on the offensive end) is met with the same resounding complaints.

Yeah, no other student section does anything like that.

At all.

Ever.

Does Iowa even have a student section at basketball games? Don't they give the tickets away free to students and they still don't show up? Maybe he just can't hear Iowa fans getting upset over calls because they aren't at the game?

Good point.

The student section at the Michigan State/Purdue game was the largest I have ever seen it at Mackey. I don't ever remember it covering that much of the arena, even when Glenn Robinson was playing.

Being there in person, you could easily tell when they were booing just to boo and when they were genuinely upset about a call/non-call.

It's pretty much a consensus among Big Ten fans that you pukes are the worst. Not the worst as in, "oh man I don't want to play there, they're so intense!!"; Worst as in, shut the [expletive] up you know-nothing fucks

Don't let your hatred for Da Bum cloud your judgment.

It clouds everything in my life.

ETA: But seriously, you could take a survey for worst student sections and every team is going to name the teams they hate most, and Purdue.

Purdue's student section annoys me the most because they are Jonny-come-lately's. When they sucked in Keady's last few years, the students were nowhere to be found. Now they act like Purdue is the mecca of college basketball. The same can be said for Ohio State's entire fanbase. They were nauseating at the Big Ten tournament.

You realize that the students that were there during the Keady years are not the same students that are there now, right?

Yes, I'm aware, but you have never seen that dropoff in student/fan support at IU or any other dormant basketball powers.

The student section didn't drop-off nearly as much as you're making it seem. What dropped was ticket sales to the folks living in town, not the student base.

The noise from the student section certainly dropped off during those years, since they didn't have a hell of a lot to cheer about.

I don't watch a lot of IU basketball. Or other sucky basketball teams for that matter.

I was at Purdue as an undergrad during the final years of the Keady era, and I think you're making this up just as a means of justification for a bad experience (or maybe a couple) that you've experienced watching your team play at Mackey.

During Keady's final years, the students were pissed and wanted him out. I think it was ridiculous and at the time I thought Keady was doing a decent job. More than that, I thought his reputation spoke well enough for him, and there was plenty of other students that agreed with me there. Almost a JoePa sort of opinion of "he's earned the right to correct this".

Regardless, the one thing I will say that even in down years the Purdue students and fan base in general were always passionate. They may have disagreed with Keady staying or going, but they were always passionate. They also always supported the players. Guys like Willie Deane, Kenneth Lowe, and Carl Landry may not mean much to you, but those guys were icons on the West Lafayette campus during those years.

The bottom line is it's unfair to generalize me and my like in that way. It's presumptive, condescending, and uncalled for.

Not sure if this has been mentioned already but Purdue recruit Jacob Lawson tore his ACL last week. I was hoping he would help fill the size gap with JJ gone next year. If he rehabs ok he could still be back in time.

Creek's career is probably done. I mean, he'll get back on the court, but his career as an effective basketball player is over. 2 dislocated kneecaps when he hadn't even come back 100% from the 1st.

Agreed. It's really, really unfortunate, but anything IU gets from Creek from this point on has to be considered gravy. I'm not counting on much of anything from him in the future. It really sucks for him as a player/kid and for the program, which was by no means in a position to lose a competent player, much less one of Creek's caliber*.

*Just for clarification, because I can imagine that statement getting taken way ouf of context, Creek was a future all-Big Ten performer and likely four-year leading scorer for IU -- I'm not implying he was a future NBA star or even future NBA player. But he was huge for IU's development.

I'd heard IU student support had fallen off. They're more worried about holding up those stupid heads and wearing [expletive] costumes than cheering on a really crappy product.

Well, yes, technically, but context following. The student section has been later arriving and somewhat sparser this year. In a vacuum, you're right (and the heads/costumes are of course ridiculous). However, the student section was starting at such a great size, it's not terribly surprising (note: some of this is uncited, so grain of salt is fair). IU reserves forty-eight percent of its seating for students (which, last I heard was the most in the nation) -- and that's for the second largest stadium in the Big Ten for the third smallest total enrollment in the conference. So it's pretty relative -- IU is still receiving excellent student support/attendance, though it has decreased to some extent.

Hey guys, it's not IU's fault they're bad, they just lost Michael Jordan.

Ha ha, see, I knew if I didn't qualify that statment someone would post what you posted. Someone posted it anyway . . . Creek was a quality player though, on a team with precious few.

Yes they have a student section. They give away tickets to like 2-3 games per year starting last year. Yes the student section at Iowa for basketball sucks really bad.

And none of that has anything to do with your student section being the biggest bunch of idiots in the league. Everyone understands how student sections work. Yours is just the worst because they expect a 10 to 1 ratio of fouls and seem to know absolutely nothing about basketball. It's an epidemic.

What a stupid statement. No one expects that big of a foul differential, and pretty much every student section in the history of college athletics has made noise when a call doesn't go their team's way, justified or not. Purdue's student section is no worse than any other school in that regard.

The "seem to know absolutely nothing about basketball" statement is ridiculous. Every team/school has stupid fans, smart fans, average fans, etc.

I think you may be right here. I mean, I was in total disagreement before but I think you won me over. Purdue students are just a bunch of idiots. No wait, I mean Iowa fans are idiots. Wait, what?
