Assuming for a second that there is a risk of a Big Ten team being booted from the conference in some sort of restructuring, and that they want to keep the best combination of quality school and quality athletic departments, which Big Ten team do you think is most at risk of being let go.

I would assume the big revenue sports carry the most weight, and in special circumstances, a headline team from a smaller sport may have strong influence. For instance, Iowa's wrestling program might be the most significant non-basketball/football program in the conference. Northwestern struggles with the athletics, but they've been a respectable football program for a decade and are probably the leading academic institution, helping their cause. Ohio State is a no brainer as they've carried the weight of the conference for years now.

Try and keep personal hatred of a "worthy" school out of the debate, but just in case, you get 2 choices.

From an academic perspective, Indiana is probably the least well-rounded school in the b10. They're good at what they do, but they simply don't have the breadth of programs of a typical b10 school.

A lot of daydreamers here. There's a ZERO chance that IU gets booted out of the Big 10. I think there's practically a zero chance that ANYBODY gets booted out.

I don't think so, either. But the question is what b10 team brings the least to the table, not do you think they'll get kicked out.

Just as an example, every big 10 school but IU has a very well regarded engineering school (which helps drive large endowments for the universities). IU has no engineering program whatsoever (or at least didn't when I went to school).

I didn't cast a second vote as I couldn't decide which school next (and I only just noticed that you can pick two).

Could the person who voted for Michigan please justify that choice? I'm having trouble understanding.

F Michigan.

I was given two votes for just this reason it said.

I could be wrong but I thought all the original members of the Big Ten couldn't be kicked out. I've heard others say it but even if its not a rule I'm pretty sure it would never happen. That eliminates Northwestern who pretty easily brings the least to the table. They aren't very good at almost any sports (or at least in the major sports) and they have small stadiums. They may do okay record wise in football but their stadium has a capacity of something around 47,000 and if I'm not mistaken they never fill it. They are probably the best when it comes to education but they are really bad when it comes to athletics.

You may have misread what this thread was supposed to be about just like I did. I think it's intended to be totally hypothetical, not reality.

Well in that case its easily Northwestern. They not only are bad at most sports but like I said due to their stadiums and in lack of fan support they bring in by far the least revenue. I don't think academics can make up for all of that. After them I would say perhaps IU because other than men's basketball and soccer (yes I realize soccer is not important but worth noting) they don't do much and are towards the bottom in academics.

northwestern's endowment is about 5 or 6 times larger than schools like michigan st and iowa. the difference between the academic impact of northwestern and most other big ten schools is pretty damn big.

Yeah that's true. Their endowment may cover their lack of athletic revenue. I would be curious to see if it does though because they probably lose millions on football compared to the other schools simply because of attendance.

edit: According to this article Northwestern made $13 million less than the next Big Ten school for the 2007-08 year. Indiana was 10th in the Big Ten (38th in nation) with $54 million while Northwestern was 11th (59th) with $41 million. This is just football Northwestern is probably last in basketball too and many other sports.

I'm shocked the Bum isn't considering women's lacrosse equally to basketball. Haven't you ever heard of title IX?

Also, Northwestern's endowment is 2nd in the Big Ten to Michigan. The next closest to them is Minnesota at 3.7 Billion less. I'm sure Northwestern's basketball program is losing at least 3.5 Billion alone.

You know you can provide the info without being a jackass. Northwestern's endowment does cover the lack of atheltic revenue by a wide margin. Thanks for clearly that up. And for the record I never said that small women's sports would get equal say just that they get some say. The AD would have to at least get their opinion or risk being accused of violating Title IX. But alas you never were one to not exaggerate posts and skew them into whatever you want them to be so you can feel good at night.

michigan and purdue, though I almost voted for Illinois instead.

Please explain Michigan. They bring in more revenue than anyone. Athletics they are probably second to OSU and academic endowment they are No. 1.
