How does Northwestern suck at football. They dont have the 2 great years that illinois had in the 2000s but they have been more consistant winners than them. Illinois has been pretty sucky suck for all but 2 years in the last 10. Indiana has the worst football program in the B10 bar none. Going by TV revs(population being a crude form) iowa is probably the lowest when it comes to their state. Minnesota is almost twice as big as them. Indiana 'shares' the population with Purdue. Penn State and Ohio State bring it when it comes to accessing that states TV market. Michigan and MSU bring it but split it too, but both also have good national exposure. Iowa and Indiana are near the bottom on bringing it.

That's a stupid way of breaking down TV revenues.

Enlighten me to a better way. This is similar to what people talk about Texas bringing to the TV revenues if they came to the B10. This is why the B10 would be interested in Texas, expanding the B10 network to Texas, a heavily populated state. If Penn State were an indepedant do you think the B10 network would be all that popular in that state and local cable operators would pay for the channel. No. Look at the B10 tv and SEC tv contracts compared to the other conferences and look at the pop difference.

Michigan is #2 in academics (behind NWU) in the Big Ten

In terms of endowment they are No. 1 in the country. That is according to wikipedia which lists the official PDF as the source and has a link to the official document.

michigan is nowhere close to having the largest endowment of any american university.

I am basing it on this not sure what the guidelines are for the National Association of College and University Business Affairs. In looking at more than just a quick glance at 2009 MIT in every year that their number was listed had a bigger endowment.

harvard's endowment is 25 billion; that blows michigan out of the water.

And it was approaching 40 billion not that long ago. Yeah, the guy who let that decline by a third got fired.

Because no one gives a crap about Northwestern football. They have crappy attendance and no one cares to watch their games except the few Northwestern fans that actually exist. Just because they are in Chicago doesn't mean they bring in that market. People in Chicago are mostly Illinois fans with all the other Big ten schools being represented at least as much as Northwestern and probably more in most cases. Iowa may not have a large population compared to other states but almost the entire state of Iowa cares about Hawkeye football. The best comparison would be Nebraska. Iowa is no where near the level of Nebraska but like Nebraska almost the entire state is a fan of the team.

From an academic perspective, Indiana is probably the least well-rounded school in the b10. They're good at what they do, but they simply don't have the breadth of programs of a typical b10 school.

That's incredibly unfair. The state of Indiana has two major state schools (Indiana and Purdue) and, while certainly overlap exists, they intentionally attempt to offer different programs and attract different students. You point out engineering but not various schools that Indiana has and Purdue lacks? Why is engineering the salient program? I can only posit it's either (i) ignorance or (ii) bias.

That said, it would be arguable Indiana brings the least to the table, though that is of course extremely relative. Indiana likely isn't the worst academic school in the Big Ten -- though US News & World Report places IU tied with Michigan State and Iowa for "last." Basketball is terrible right now, but I think we all know that's not permanent. Regardless, Indiana was the fourth most valuable college basketball team by Forbes at $22.3 million in 2009, which is tops in the Big Ten. In 2009, IU had the fifteenth biggest endowment among public universities (which is only good for seventh in the Big Ten, as I said it's extremely relative). However, football is king and IU is dreadful. In itself, that might be enough to make IU the least valuable in the Big Ten.

If it makes you feel any better, I would have listed Purdue second using the same rationale. :)

That's fair. Depending on what one thinks of the academics-athletics spectrum (i.e., what to do about Northwestern), Indiana and Purdue are very possibly the two least valuable Big Ten members. The splitting of the academic pie is certainly a very salient reason when compared to the other eight/nine. However, I just don't see why Purdue's exclusive programs (e.g., engineering) would necessarily trump Indiana's (e.g., law, medicine). If Purdue is ahead of Indiana on the Big Ten totem pole, it's because of football not engineering (admittedly, overall Purdue's academics are stronger currently than Indiana's, though I think not enough to be dispositive).

I had to pick one of the two, though. I just gave Purdue a slight edge.

i'm kinda surprised michigan st has only gotten two votes. their academics are close to the bottom of the conferences and their football program doesn't have a whole lot of success or prestige. the basketball team is obviously good, but their other athletic programs (besides hockey) tend to be pretty lousy too.

Who voted for Wisconsin?

Even though I guess they could be a good answer, I mean.. they don't even really have a baseball team.

I voted for OSU and Wisconsin because nobody else had.
