Matt Stairs and The Hall of Could Have Been

Might be in the Hall of Fame if: I'll let Bill explain.

"Look at it. Somebody decided he was a second baseman, he tears through the minor leagues, gets to Montreal, the Expos take one look at him and say, 'He's no second baseman, get real.' He bounces around, goes to Japan, doesn't really get to play until he's almost 30, then hits 38 homers, slips into a part-time role and hits 15-20 homers every year for 10 years in about 250 at-bats a season. ... You put him in the right park, right position early in his career ... he's going to hit a LOT of bombs."

What can you say? It's all there. Stairs did not get 500 at-bats until he was 30 -- he had a .370 OBP that year, hit 26 homers, drove in 106. The next year, he had the 38-homer season. His average dropped the next season, and he never got 500 at-bats in a season after that.

I always liked Stairs. I feel really bad for him, because it seems like every time in his career he was putting up good numbers as a full-time player, he got traded to a contender to assume a bench role.

Wait a minute... someone thought Matt Stairs was a second baseman?

And does anyone know the record for number of teams played for in the majors? He's got to be getting up there.

Mike Morgan and Ron Villone lead the way with 12 each. This is either number 11 or 12 for Stairs.

His first pro seasons were at 2B, then SS/3B. I think the reasoning is weak here. His switch from a MI to a corner guy probably led to him beefing up, which led to his power. He wasn't going to be a little power hitting 2B.

If he had given up MI earlier he may have gotten more ABs and had better stats. Or he may have never made the majors at all.
