"I will just explain it to him and how the people are," Banks said. "I don't think he really understood that. People are for you; they want to see you do well. They are forgiving people. We haven't won in over 100 years, so this audience here is pretty special."

I don't think Ernie gets it. People are raving lunatics and wouldn't forgive him.

Yeah, hence my question. Banks' intentions seem good and he's not coming at this like the usual morons, but there's simply no logical reason (from Sosa's POV) for Sammy to pull a McGwire.

If you are talking about just Cubs fans, then you will get some lunatics that will never forgive him, some lunatics that will freak out early and then get over it, some mildly annoyed that will eventually get over it, and some people that won't really care. I'd bet heavily on the 2nd category being the largest.

As for the population as a whole, everybody already includes him in that group, so I'm not sure what sort of longterm negative there would be. In the short run people would freak, but that's about it.

So the 77% of the Hall of Fame voters who held steroid and HGH use against McGwire (like they will against Sammy) are "raving lunatics" because they "wouldn't forgive" him and disagree with SSR.

Wow just wow.

To be fair, like someone else pointed out, it really looks like Ernie has the best intentions. It doesn't seem like he's trying to slam Sammy so much as say what he thinks is best for him. Ernie is just effing senile. (not necessarily because of these comments specifically, just in general.)

So what makes you think Ernie is senile? The fact that he's happy, positive, and optimistic? I became a Cub fan in 1954 and Ernie was my favorite player throughout the years. His attitude and outlook hasn't changed in those 56 years, so I don't know what you're basing your comment about senility on. He certainly is an improvement over the sullen, greedy, media-hungry, drug crazed players of today.

The fact that he's always walking around somewhere in his own damn world. Sure, he's a happy, positive guy. But he's also pretty far out in left field most of the time.

Edit: Also, "Drug crazed players of today?" Really?

let's face it, your typical douchebag cubs fan won't forgive sammy for not playing in a meaningless game in '04. the steroids probably don't even matter, they already hate him.

Plus Mark Grace doesn't like him. Sammy won't even be able to get his # retired til he's old and decrepit because of how embarrassing the reaction to him would be.

QUIT TALKING ABOUT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

When are people associated with MLB going to realize that talking about this crap is bad for the game? Unfortunately, I know the answer is never. But baseball people really need to go the school of media relations that the NFL people subscribe to when it comes to "PED." Mention it then NEVER talk about it again. i.e. "Oh by the way, Shawn Merriman is going to be suspended a quarter of the season for using PED :-" And in other news,...." Even guys who didn't play like John Clayton fall in line so there's no reason baseball's similar reporters couldn't do the same.

Talk about the game. Or is the product on the field not good enough now to promote? I, for one, am tired of this stuff being news.

I think it goes back to the ridiculous obsession with the mythology of the game. They were more than happy to let the media portray baseball as this sort of poetic game using flowery language. So now it's difficult to unwind that. You see it with discussions about stats vs intangibles, and you see it here with the steroid talk. MLB can't put a gag order on it. Too many people bought into the myth of their history as something other than just a for profit sporting event.

"Drug-crazed players of today" is hilarious because the players of today probably don't hand a candle to the drinking/snorting/dropping/popping/smoking antics of decades past.

Posters here probably hate Ernie because he wants today's players to "play the game the right way".

You do realize the difference between people actually hating Sandberg and simply not wanting him to manage the team, right?

I don't hate Ernie, he's awesome. I'm just saying he's a little senile.

It's always amusing how the anti-steroids fanatics are mum when it comes to players taking speed.

Right. I still love Sandberg the player and would instantly embrace him in a relatively meaningless Maddux-like role.

I want him nowhere near being manager of the team.

And to be clear, I like Ernie Banks a lot and honestly don't think there's anything at all wrong with what he said. He wasn't judging anyone in his statement and there wasn't any "in my day we played clean" garbage. He's just saying that Sosa might as well admit he did steroids to save some face. I disagree that it would have any impact, but Ernie isn't being the typical whiny old-timer.
