Interminable debates

How about a forum dedicated to issues that have no real hope of resolution or consensus? Things like chemistry, clutch ability, and the validity of defensive metrics are constantly mucking up other discussions, and aren't going away anytime soon.

Or at least dedicated threads to keep this chaff from cropping up all over the place.

The problem is that these topics come up as part of other discussions. How can you talk about the value of Ryan Theriot without a discussion about the quality of his defense? How can you talk about Milton Bradley without covering chemistry? As unresolvable as these things are, they also happen to be central (or at least relevant) topics to a number of other discussions on the board.

plus...

what else is there to discuss right now?

I agree to a point, but when such a discussion totally hijacks a thread (as tends to happen), it would be nice to be able to take it elsewhere.

All such debates would end if those that disagreed with me would just admit they are wrong.

Seriously though - I agree with Tim. I'm not sure it's realistic to try to completely contain such discussions to one thread. They're going to come up again and again. We can try to keep threads from veering off topic, but there's a balance between allowing a thread to grow and move through different topics and acting like the gestapo squelching all discussion that isn't directly on point with the original post in a thread.

But those discussions inevitably devolve into bickering and name calling. What purpose does that serve?

So certain topics aren't even allowed to be talked about?

So you want a forum where bickering and name calling is the purpose?

That's not what i meant. I simple asked what purpose letting a thread devolve into bickering and name calling serves.

I like this thread. I will say the insult contests on NSBB are what makes it the best.

Oh and I'm talking about the fun-hearted not evil spirited insults.

In that case...

Pur-don't.

Don't be mad at me because I won't trade you my 2nd rd pick or that your team sucks (talking about NSBB Premier League not the Cubs).

You make that sounds as if it's an unfathomable idea for a topic to be "forbidden". I'm not suggesting that we would do that, but it's an option.
