The greatest fans on earth turn into the biggest bunch of mindless lemmings:

McLiar greeted with standing ovation

I've always hated the Cardinals and their fans, but this is absurd. What would possess a fanbase to support a player who cheated throughout his career and lie about it? Ugh, morons.

Because a ton of players have used PED's over the decades and everyone freakin' loved the Steroid Era when it was going down?

so you mean to tell me that if Sosa admitted to steroid use and showed up at the Cubs Convention two weeks later, he should receive love and adulation from all in attendance?

Wouldn't bother me if he did. If I was there I'd be one of the ones cheering him on. If someone wants to look down on it, whatever, fine, but it shouldn't be a surprise that a lot of people still love these players.

When the Sosa flag was offered as a Bingo prize, nearly the entire place (1,500?) erupted in Boo's. Not apples to apples of course (stands to reason more ardendt supporters would show for an appearance), but it was a very strong negative reaction.

I would assume those boo's would be there even if the steroids thing wasn't an issue given how he ended up leaving the Cubs and the bat corking. It's not like McGwire left St. Louis under the same circumstances. He retired there as a beloved player.

Yeah, the Sosa hate isn't related to PED's, at least not to a significant degree. Sosa was a bit of an ass, but there was an effort to smear him at the end. Even if there hadn't been it's stupid. The guy was pretty much the only reason to tune into or attend a Cubs game for years, much the same as McGwire was for the Cardinals.

I have no ill will for Sammy Sosa at all. The opposite, in fact.

I [expletive] hate Cub fans.

Me either.

^I do because he was always a "me first" player, and he really didn't even try to hide it.

In what way?

he kept all those HR and RBI for himself

bastard

The guy had a bad attitude. Did I appreciate his production? Yeah. But I can separate the two.

The one example I can recall is when Sammy went on the DL and teammates said in the media what they are supposed to say, "we are fighting hard and doing the things we need to do and winning while Sammy is out." That sort of thing. Someone told Sammy about it, and his response in the media was anger in the nature of "THEY NEED ME!"

Anyone getting on Cardinal fans for giving McGwire a stading ovation needs to realize it happens everywhere. Giambi and Pettite got them in New York, Manny got it in LA, and Bonds was loved in San Francisco by their fans. Sosa may not get an ovation from Cubs fans but it is because of how he left the team. If Sandberg or Lee or someone that was loved by Cubs fans came out he would get the same treatment by Cubs fans.

Is that worse than hating someone for their rooting interests in baseball?

But I don't see how his bad attitude (in your opinion) made him a "me first player". I don't really get what that means. In fact, I find it kind of hard to accuse most baseball players of playing selfishly given the nature of the game.

He was productive and did what he was paid to do. I don't see how that's being selfish, regardless of whatever perceived attitude/ego problem he may have had.

Sosa did more for this organization than anyone since Frank Chance. Together, he and McGwire helped the game far more than they hurt it.

I will cheer them both at every opportunity. Cub fans could learn a lot from the Cardinal backers.

Because after all, they are "The Best (blindly loyal) Fans in Baseball."

Isn't it about time for Sammy to follow McLiar's lead and apologize to the fans for his use of steroids and HGH, the corked bat, leaving the park during the game, alienating his teammates, etc? Why is he in hiding?

Why do you think he owes people anything? It's really not his problem that you feel hurt by whatever he did.

Apologize? For peeling these franchises off the mat and making them relevant again?

Sosa played thirteen seasons for the Cubs, yet the 'roid truthers just want to remember 6/3/03 and 9/25/04. Never mind that he led the team out of the darkest days of 1994 and to a level of popularity only dreamed about previously.

I'm grateful for what these men did. I remember what MLB was like from '95-'97.

Reality is this: Mark Grace (and Jack Clark) didn't sell tickets.

Like Sammy, the WWF sold a lot of tickets and brought pro wrestling to a level of popularity only dreamed about previously. Maybe Sammy should join the WWF. He'd be a "Natural."

Clearly the good of the sport (and make no mistake, despite the recent hullabaloo, the steroid era has been a net positive for baseball) should take a back seat to the sensibilities of sanctimonious and sensationalist douchebags.

J.R. is dead on with his assessment.

Agree, all those people who think "the steroid era" is encompassed in the mid 90's to 2005-ish are clearly suckers.

I can recall afew more. In addition to what you pointed out, Sammy also insisted on a new and more lucrative contract after his 98 season even though he had a couple of years left on his current deal. There is also the fact that he consistently showed up late to spring training, and ditched the Cubs convention almost every year despite being the teams biggest star.

I'd be curious to see the Voice of Reason explain how I'm being a "sucker." I fully recognize that PED use did and does exist in baseball. At the same time I recognize that people didn't really have a problem with "steroid baseball" at the time of its peak: in fact, it was the opposite and it arguably brought the game back from the brink. I also recognize that the "steroid era" extends well beyond the relatively small window of time and small group of players that those who decry it the most want to relegate it to.
