The Cubs have asked about Nationals outfielder Nyjer Morgan, reports Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com.

The Nationals aren't interested in dealing him. Morgan, 29, batted .307/.369/.388 with 25 extra-base hits, 42 stolen bases and 74 runs scored in 120 games between the Pirates and Nationals in '09 before fracturing his left hand in August. The Cubs are rightly exploring the alternatives now that they've shed Milton Bradley, but the Nationals have no desire to swap a player who is so valuable to their lineup on both sides of the ball.

Nyjer Morgan was excellent last season, but I just don't see him as having enough power to keep pitchers honest and keep that walk rate up.

Nyjer Morgan is the kind of guy whose defense is so spectacular that it makes up for his total lack of power, right?

Morgan is a pretty good player, I don't know why Pittsburgh gave him up. The Cubs would have the makings of a pretty good defensive club with Morgan in CF and Fukudome in RF. But yeah, it looks like Washington is in no hurry to deal him.

Most GM's like to maximize the trade return by not publicly saying they want to trade a guy. Only our guy does that...

Morgans success rate at stealing bases raises a flag. Can he catch and throw it , or is this just a 29 year old Pierre?

The Cubs are "not leaning toward" any specific candidate to be their new center fielder at this time, reports Jon Paul Morosi and Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com.

The trade of Milton Bradley will allow the Cubs to move Kosuke Fukudome to right field, where he's less likely to be a liability, but it leaves a void in center. Marlon Byrd and Scott Podsednik are the team's strongest options among free agents, but GM Jim Hendry could also explore trades, possibly with the Yankees for Melky Cabrera or Brett Gardner, depending on how their roster shakes out. Reed Johnson could also make sense, after the Cubs non-tendered him last weekend.

If we have to go for speed, Gardner wouldn't be horrible. He's a younger, cheaper and slightly better version of Podsednik.

Unlikely, but possible.

He's a great defensive center fielder, though - 35.8 UZR/150 in center last year and 39.0 career in center. For comparison, Mike Cameron was a 10.8 UZR/150 guy in center last year.

He's only a 69% base stealer, though. If he came cheap (prospect wise), this would be better than Pods or Ankiel and I might prefer him to Byrd as well. That all depends on each player's price, though.

Nyjer Morgan woudln't be a terrible acquisition, but I feel he's exactly the type of guy Hendry would overpay for.

So by that you mean he is a guy who is alive?

Haha. Touche, sir.
