It sounds like he'll continue to take some time off when they go on the road. I'm curious to see if WGN looks for a full-time fill-in as opposed to the rotation they've used the last year or two. Dave Otto seemed to get the opportunity more often than not, but I recall Keith Moreland getting a chance last year too.

Dave Otto is beyond awful.

I know some people don't care for Ron in the booth, but I think Pat and Ron are a hell of a team. I still listen to them on 720 over Len and Bob.

Good to know I'll still have Santo material to mine from the broadcasts.

As for his temporary replacement when necessary, I wager it has a lot to do with how much notice they have. I'm sure Ron circles a few road trips each year where he knows the stadium is difficult to get around in and/or he just hates the place (as he used to do with the trips to RFK and Shea) or he just thinks the travel will be too much for him. They used Keith Moreland in that fill-in capacity last season, have to imagine they'd use him or someone similar in the seasons to come. Otto filled this roll prior to 2009, but let's hope they're moving away from using him except when necessary, because he really is just bad. He adds nothing to the broadcast and unlike Ron, has no personality and little to no chemistry with Pat.

Did we give him a no trade clause?

He's got 5/10 rights.

in all honesty i just hope that ron santo has at least three more years. people with his health history don't tend to get far into old age.

I hope he gets to see a championship, but it looks like that window is closing.

And he was the first player in history to exercise that right to block a trade.

I have to disagree, Len and Bob are very good and I'll take them over Pat and Ron any day. That said, Pat Hughes is outstanding and he together with Santo are ok at best. I love Ron Santo and he is one my idols, but Pat makes that team work.

Could they get a third voice in the booth please. I like hearing Ron's instinctive responses to things but his analysis is not ver insightful or even interesting. Give Pat someone to turn to to actually talk about the situation/player/whatever and let Ron groan and cheer and burn his hair and lose his pencil to fill in the empty air space.

For the life of me, I don't understand why the 5/10 rule isn't referred to as "The Santo Clause" ????

Hence the joke. ;)

Well done, Fred.

ninja edit: That trade was to the Angels in 1972 for a pair of guys who never amounted to anything. After that, he was traded to the White Sox.
