Did we give him a no trade clause?

He's got 5/10 rights.

And he was the first player in history to exercise that right to block a trade.

 

ninja edit: That trade was to the Angels in 1972 for a pair of guys who never amounted to anything. After that, he was traded to the White Sox.

I think it was December '73

It was. Santo had a good year for the Cubs in 1973, but by that time they were completely dismantling that team. I don't remember who the Cubs were supposed to get from the Angels, but they got Steve Stone and Steve Swisher among others from the Sox after the proposed trade to the Angels fell through.
