Was just going to post this. I think Hendry needs to take a serious run at him, at the very lest he provides a bench bat he was played LF in the past so he is somewhat versatile. I wouldn't be opposed to a Baker/Johnson platoon at 2B to start the year and go from there. With the Braves wanting an OF bat what if we try this 3-way trade

Cubs get: Kelly Johnson

Rays get: Milton +$5-6 mil.

Braves get: Burrell

An average 2B in return for giving away an above average OF AND 5-6 million?

It's not ideal, but it's something...

Don't need to worry about a trade anymore, he was non-tendered.

Braves non-tender Kelly Johnson (and Ryan Church, but he was already DFA'd anyway)

I know he's non-tendered now, but why exactly would the Braves have taken on Burrell's contract?

Johnson would probably make around $3.5 mil in arbitration this year, Burrell has $9 left. So the difference in losing KJ and bringing in Burrell isn't all that big considering that they will probably bring in a FA bat for at least the added difference between the two contracts ($5.5-7 mil).

We should definitely look at Kelly Johnson and also Jonny Gomes who was just non-tendered by the Reds. He's got good power and could come in handy from the bench and maybe even spot start.

Others:

Jack Cust, A's

Scott Olsen, Nats

Jeremy Reed, Mets

Tim Redding, Mets

Cory Sullivan, Mets

Ryan Church, Braves

Brian Bass, Orioles

If Jack Cust could play defense worth a damn I'd take him in a heartbeat, unfortunately he has no NL value.

We really should look at Church as, at the very least, a 4th outfielder. It doesn't make sense not to.

Scott Olsen could be interesting, but he had that shoulder surgery. Could be an interesting buy low reclamation project. Nats said they expected him to be ready for ST back in July after his surgery. Then again a reporter blogged this back in July:

Scott Olsen, down for the year after shoulder surgery in July, will absolutely be tendered a contract in the offseason if there's any hope at all of his being available. No matter what his price, just letting him walk is no longer an option; an expensive arbitration ruling may await the Nats come winter.

Maybe the Nats know something is up and he's not gonna be ready

I don't blame the Yankees for non-tendering him, but could Wang really be somewhat finished as a pitcher? He's about to be 30 and he's two years removed from a good full season. If it doesn't cost much it'd be foolish for a team in need of pitching to ignore him. Granted, he was embarrassingly bad last year

Garko, Capps and Atkins all cut by their respective teams.

Take a flyer on Atkins for the bench or Capps for the bullpen?

I'm really surprised at lot of these names. Capps? He had his first bad year at the age of 25 this season, but the previous 3 seasons had a combined ERA of 3.04 with a 1.05WHIP and 143ERA+ in 213IP... and Pirates gave up on him?

Surprised me too. Worried about having to pay him in arbitration, maybe?

Must be. They are the Pirates after all. His abry price wouldn't be too terribly high, and they could've agreed to it and then turned around and traded him and probably gotten at least one nice player in return

Non-tendered players I'd have interest in:

Jose Arrendondo

Garrett Atkins

Matt Capps

Ryan Church

Ryan Garko

Jonny Gomes

Kelly Johnson

Mike MacDougal

Adam Miller

Scott Olsen

Chien Ming Wang

Obviously, this list changes depending on price and whether players are willing to accept bench / platoon roles.

Arredondo was non-tendered because he's out for TJS; he's not going to be of much use to anyone until at least the start of the 2011 season.

Church would be a fine signing for the bench and I would potentially take flyers on any two or three of Atkins, Capps, Gomes, Johnson, Olsen and Wang.

Oh, I know that Arredondo is out for the season. But he'd be a great guy to give a cheap one year deal with a cheap 2nd year club option so we could monitor his recovery.
