Looks like a 2 year 12.5mil deal with a mutual option for a 3rd. Thats a pretty good deal for Boston.

FRIDAY, 9:08am: ESPN's Buster Olney has the terms on Scutaro: $1MM signing bonus, $5MM in 2010, $5MM in 2011, and a 2012 option with a $6MM club option, $3MM player option, and $1.5MM buyout. That makes it a two-year, $12.5MM deal - less than I thought he'd receive.

I wouldn't want to give up a first round pick for Scutaro. The money and years looks about right, but to give up a pick for what is probably a slightly better version of Ryan Theriot is not something I'd normally consider.

I wouldn't like the contract or the loss of draft picks. Is he a fantastic fielder?

Boston has had SS issues, right? I don't even know who the incumbent is. Is it there one weak spot?

Yea I'm pretty sure they had a merry go round at SS last year. Also, when I said it was a good deal, I didnt realize he was 34 already. With the loss of a draft pick along with it, makes it even more questionable.

EDIT: Alex Gonzalez is who he will be replacing.

His reputation is very mixed defensively. Many see him as average to below average defensively at SS.

And Boston has definitely had SS issues. They had Alex Gonzalez there at the end of the year but he already went to the Blue Jays. There was talk of moving Pedroia to SS but with Scutaro on board it looks like that won't happen.

Boston has had trouble at SS for going on 5 years now. They haven't been able to get more than a half season of good shortstop play out of anyone since Nomar left. And except for maybe Jed Lowrie they don't have anyone internally who can fix that problem.

So unoffically the Red Sox essentially traded Alex Gonzalez and a 1st rd pick for Marco Scutaro? Really Boston? A moderate upgrade is worth giving up a 1st rd pick? They must be really down on Jed Lowrie.

I'll be shocked if Boston actually winds up giving up a 1st for Scutaro. My guess is they will give up a 2nd or 3rd, once they sign some other guys who are ranked higher than Scutaro. And then, they will go after overslot guys in the draft to make up for their lack of high draft picks......Epstein is smart like that......

The best part about this deal from Boston's standpoint is that it's only two years. You have to wonder if Scutaro can repeat his success from last season. He just had a career year as a 33-year old, and that was preceded by two seasons with a sub-.700 OPS. I think they overpaid, but then again someone was going to give him $5-6 million per year. A team like the Red Sox can afford to do that moreso than most teams.

Losing the 29th pick stinks for them, sure, but I think they were more willing to bite the bullet considering they're getting the 20th pick from Atlanta for Billy Wagner. They essentially moved up 9 spots in the draft order and found a short-term solution for one of their weakest areas of production...if I'm a Boston fan, I could live with it.

If I'm Theo Epstein and I'm looking for a crappy middle infielder, I sign Ronnie Belliard to play 2B a a much lower cost than Scutaro, move Pedroia to SS, and save the draft picks. Scutaro kinda sucks... he'll provide league average defense and probably revert back to his norm as a hitter, which is below average. Belliard is no savior, but he's peroven to be a much better hitter and will provide league average D at 2B just as well as Scutaro would provide league average D at SS. Also SS was Pedroia's original position in the minors where he was actually a pretty solid defender at. This is a really silly move by Boston
