Phils, Polanco Nearing Three-Year Deal

By Luke Adams [December 3 at 9:10am CST]

9:10am: Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that the Phils are "believed to be" closing in on a three-year deal worth $18MM with Polanco. The deal should be finalized today.

Ive always been a fan of Polanco and his oddly shaped cranium, but 3/18mil? Even if he wasnt 34 years old, that would sound like a lot for him. I guess Ibanez worked out for them so who knows. All I know is if This were the Cubs, there would be people with torches and pitchforks outside Hednrys door.

That sure seems like a good deal for Polanco.

That does not seem like a good deal to me, but I'm guessing that means he will be their starting 3B. Also, "if this were the Cubs" and the Cubs were 1 year removed from a World Series title and one month removed from another NL pennant, I don't think many people would have room to freak out with pitchforks.

Pretty sure he meant it was a good deal for Polanco, not necessarily a smart or good move for the Phils. At least that's how I read it, and I agree if that's what he meant.

Considering the talent level of the rest of the roster, I don't see this as a bad move. If they had a bad roster and made this move, I wouldn't like it.

well the people with torches and pitchforks would be stupid, because polanco is a very good defender, pretty solid hitter and generally worth a contract in that range.

I'd say he's only worth a contract in that range playing MIF. I don't see him as an $18M third baseman.

When you are getting 3b production from your SS and 2b, it probably doesn't mean as much if you settle for less at 3b. The production is interchangeable.

you're just giving up that advantage though. a bad third baseman is worth the same regardless of what offense you're getting up the middle.

I am guessing the same thing that Polanco will be the starting 3B for the Phillies, I don't see it being that smart of a move by them.

Gold Glove defender, and is a spray-the-ball contact hitter that is tough to strike out(46 times in 618 AB's). On a team like the Cubs who are weak at 2nd base and need a backup at 3rd, Polanco would have been a good pickup at 6 mil. Especially if they are still in "win-now" mode.

Aren't the Phillies loaded with starting position players that are in the top 5 in production at their respective positions? Utley, Werth, Rollins, Ibanez and Howard is a lot of offense. Polanco is a decent enough role player that doesn't hurt them. No worse than what they had at 3b last year, IMO.

I don't know if you are really giving up an advantage by adding a role player. It was like Boston adding Bill Mueller at 3rd. Still an awesome team, just can't afford all stars at every position, so you look for a solid role player that allows you to maintain the level of production you are getting from several other positions.

3B and 2B production is quite similar, they average nearly the same. If you are getting great production at one and less at the other, is there really a problem? Last year, Philly's 3B was as big a black hole as Chicago's 2B. Polanco in a down year was still an improvement over Feliz.

I don't see this as a great use of resources, but I don't see it hurting Philly either.

I think it's fairly easy to find Polanco level production from a guy who can adequately field third base without committing $18M.

no, if you want to be an average team.

The Phillies have been to the World Series two years in a row. Pedro Feliz was their 3b then and Polanco is their 3b now. Average production at one of the two positions and they are still a great offensive team, by my book anyway.

The were a great offensive team in spite of the production at third. Why would you settle when you could significantly improve? There are a lot of third basemen out there this year.

They still can significantly improve at other positions. Only the Red Sox and Yankees can afford All Stars at every position. The Red Sox went to the World Series with Bill Mueller at 3b. You don't need all stars at every position, and you don't want to put yourself in a position where you've overspent and now risk losing some of your home grown talent who now want their raises.

It's baffling that anyone could support paying a guy like Polanco 3/18 for mediocre 3B production, yet rip the Cubs for paying 2/7 for mediocre production from Grabow.

It's the SAME FRIGGIN THING only at a different position and involving even more $ and years.
