John Grabow and Aaron Miles will make a combined $6.45 million in 2010 and Hendry is afraid to offer arbitration to Rich Harden. Just let that marinate for a minute.

His arm better be about to fall off.

There has to be something there. If Hendry signed Harden for say $9MM knowing that he had arm troubles that would likely result in him missing a significant portion of the season, everyone would be pointing out that he never learned his lesson from the whole Wood and Prior fiasco and that he relies too heavily on players with a history of injuries.

Offering Arb to Harden was a risky proposition, knowing that his arb award would likely be the best offer on the market for him.

Not sure I agree with that, at all. However, as stated before, if he's injured further than we know then I don't have a problem with not tendering. That remains to be seen.

This seems a lot like the Wood and Sheets decisions last year. Both pitchers entered FA from their teams with neither being offered arbitration or any indication that their previous teams cubs/brewers would offer any sort of contract. Both teams fanbases were upset to see both leave without a contract offer, or at least not being offered arbitration. But as it turned out both were hurt more than what was common knowledge (only their organizations knew of injuries) and as it turned out both had problems passing physicals. Wood's contract, iirc, took like 1-2 months to finalize with the Indians and this was widely believe to be based on injuries Wood had and problems passing the physical and it revealing injuries not known. With Sheets he accepted a contract with the Rangers and he couldn't pass a physical and had to sit out the year recovering from surgeries, when everyone thought he was at least healthy enough to pass a physical and even if he had to miss time he would have been able to pitch at some point last year. So while both of those moves last year at the time they happened had both fanbases scratching their heads and angry with management, looking back on it they were both correct decisions. For the Cubs sake I hope it's a similar situation with Harden.

Maybe my memory is fuzzy, but I don't recall any injury problems with Wood when he signed the contract.

Pretty sure it was known he has a tear in his shoulder and it could "go" anytime, but when he took the physical for the Indians it was worse than expected and prolonged contract negotiations

No, because all three of those of guys have made it known they wish to remain Yankees and all would have to take a paycut to get a job anywhere (especially Damon). Why would Cashman pay more than he has to?

Harden made it known that he wanted to stay with the Cubs too.

The Yankees apparently didn't offer arby to Matsui, Damon, or Petit? Do y'all consider these stupid decisions too? Just wondering/discuss...

Considering the Yankees can probably add 3 all star caliber free agents for the price it would cost to retain a guy hampered by a bad back, a guy who is certainly on the down slide of his career and one other guy who only wants to pitch for the Yankees, I'd say it was pretty smart on their part to not offer to any of those guys.

Each of those guys makes twice as much as Harden, and Damon's the only one who might be a better player next year.

There always will be injury concerns with Wood. His shoulder is jacked up. Remember when his career looked like it was over and then he miraculously recovered in a few weeks?

So you think all 3 would have accepted arby then instead of holding out for longer term deals w/other teams? I can envision Petit doing that given his age and maybe even Damon, but Matsui?

Pettitte has stated each of the past few years that its Yankees or retirement. He would have accepted.

Damon and Matsui are each coming off eight digit salaries where arbitration would have guaranteed them a similar amount. Neither will make nearly that much in their upcoming deals given age, health & production.

It's a nice try, but none of the three are remotely similar in situation to Harden.

Agreed. And that's without even knowing whether these guys are "A's" or "B"'s, because it just doesn't matter. They weren't worth what it would cost them in arbitration. Nevermind that these guys would probably all love the opportunity to win another World Series, and the chances are pretty good when you play on the highest paid, best talent team in the bigs. They might re-up for the one year at the cost of a multi year deal.

So maybe Hendry just wants him back at a lower price than arbitration would have been settled on.
