Though he's a C as opposed to a skill position player, this can't be good for his already-eroding skills.

For what it's worth:

The Bears captain missed part of camp in 2008 because of the injury, which has made it difficult for Kreutz to push off and get leverage. Following surgery, he is expected to return to form, stronger and better.

Maybe we get one decent last year out of him. We probably can sign one good FA, and maybe draft another guy, but that would be a 3rd rounder at the highest. Could use any help we can. And if he does come back even worse maybe we let him go. One thing, if Beekman is the "center of the future" than he better be playing guard all year if Olin is around.

It doesn't really say anything meaningful, but the headline and first paragraph doesn't give me a good vibe. It's essentially suggesting that due to the embarrassment with the delay the Bears my rush into signing this Rogers guy to get past the bad PR they are dealing with.

The Bears interviewed Vikings quarterbacks coach Kevin Rogers on Thursday at Halas Hall, and if both parties liked what they heard, things could move quickly.

A source close to the situation said the Bears seemed to be operating with more urgency in trying to fill their offensive coordinator opening.

But if the parties aren't thrilled with each other, the process could drag out for another two weeks.

I maintain some optimism that they are being deliberate on purpose and would not suddenly change course just to end the bad headlines, but the fear remains.

if it's going to be rogers then i'd rather jusr wait until after the super bowl.

If it's going to be Rogers then I would assume there is a deadline to get things done well before the Super Bowl.

if they're really desperate enough to hire some guy off the street like rogers, al saunders is available.

Am I the only person who is completely anti-Martz? I've read way too many bad things about him. Plus I can't see Martz working under Lovie working well.

Probably not the only one, but I really have a hard time understanding people who are so anti-Martz. The worst things I've read about him are he's brash and throws the ball a lot, one thing I don't care about and the other is actually a positive. He's not ideal. He's kind of old and could clash a bit with Cutler, but he's the most qualified candidate I've heard mentioned, and in a lot of ways fits the bill. He's done the job, he's got plenty of NFL experience, he knows the passing game. I don't really care how his relationship with Lovie handles going from being his boss to being his employee. He's the OC, and on a Lovie team the OC should effectively be his own boss.

I think the whole "Cutler will clash with MArtz" thing is nonsense. Cutler wanted out of denver, true, but if you just made the Pro-Bowl, and a new coach comes to town and tries to trade you behind your back and then denies it, what would be your response? add to it I dont think Culter and Ron Turner ever publically clashed, and most of Cutler's frustration likely came out of dealing with a very weak QB coach, I'd say Cutler has been rather restrained.

I'd destroy several Gatorade tubs if I had to work Turner on a daily basis.

I think the potential for clashing has more to do with Martz publicly criticizing Jay earlier. The getting out of Denver story is meaningless to me.

Martz did? I missed that, I remember Dungy and I thought Ditka being critical, but I dont remember Martz. But so what, I still dont think that leads to a Harbaugh/Ditka type meltdown between two people who havent even worked together yet

ET: besides, didnt Martz also say he graded Cutler the highest he had ever graded a QB out of college? idk, I think its way overblown

There's been plenty of negative things said about Martz. Here's what Dick Vermeil had to say about him:

"I can't think, in my history of coaching, of any assistant who came into an NFL franchise and made the immediate impact that Mike Martz did."

As for Lovie and Martz not working well together, it might be correct, but I think Lovie is content to leave the offense alone. This wouldn't be like bringing in a caustic DC where Lovie would be clashing horns over what defenses to run. Lovie doesn't know offense. He would be essentially turning the offensive side of the ball over to Martz, just like he did with Ron Turner. And I think that's the way Martz would like to work. So I believe there's also potential for it working out fine.

...and I'm completely and totally convinced that Martz is a big upgrade over Turner.

I've been anti-Martz also, but if this is a 1-year job, I don't mind it. I'd rather get a guy that's going to be around for the long-term, but it's hard to say if anyone will be at this point. I hope they talk to the Colts/Saints assistants before making a decision, though...and if Martz is the best choice, so be it.

Rogers could suck way worse than Martz would ever suck. The upside of Rogers is nowhere near the Martz's upside. Again when Detroit dumped Martz that was their worst decision, that offense fell worse in the s'er than you could imagine. Martz made guys like Furrey and McDonald some pretty bad ass players with Jon Fn Kitna and Backus as the the LT. And when Martz came to town..boom he used K. Jones pass catching skills just like he would with Forte.

Running the football only means anything in short yardage and red zone and thats the Oline not the coordinator. Forte can run short yardage if he isnt running into a wall of asses. Are we going to credit Norv Turner for the Dallas Cowboys running game or with E. Smith and the oline? Get Martz and oline and watch out.

Bears' O-line coach Harry Hiestand is heading to Tennessee. Anybody know anything about him?

He took his share of the blame for the Bears' OLine woes last year. I'm sure if there's good talent he can work with it, but I for one am glad he was fired. I don't think the Bears had a great OLine and he ruined it, but at times last year--especially early in the year--the line wasn't even prepared to play. It took until well into the season for even average play to show up. That's too long.

I don't blame Heistand for everything, certainly. But he had a share in it.

I'm not a fan.

That's kind of what I figured, but wanted Bear fans' opinions. I've liked all of Dooley's hires to this point, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt on this one, but it seems odd.

PFT is saying that Lovie wants Martz and Angelo does not. Even said that Lovie had to pay for Martz' plane ticket for his meeting with Cutler yesterday. This could be one of those things where Angelo goes into "job save" mode, distance himself from it and try to save himself, if it doesn't work out and Lovie gets canned. Rogers is supposedly still in the picture and Angelo wanted Chudzinski evidently......
