While I'd enjoy Alabama blowing out Florida, I think we need an "unconvincing" win by either team to give TCU a chance to move up in the rankings

That makes no sense. TCU is not going to jump both SEC teams, no matter what happens. An unconvincing win gives a greater chance of both these teams having a rematch in the championship game.

That's not gonna happen. Even though this year's SEC is more respected than '06's Big 10, if they didn't give Michigan a rematch against Ohio State, I can't see them giving this loser a rematch. Michigan lost by 3 on the road, dropped to 3rd, then the 2nd place team (USC) lost, and Florida jumped them both just so that a UM/OSU rematch didn't happen.

I'm pretty sure the title game is mostly set at this point. It's either SEC winner vs Texas or (if Texas loses) SEC winner vs TCU/Cincy. I don't think there's a chance of a rematch.

I had no idea that a rematch was so likely if Texas went down tonight. That sucks.

I don't think it's that likely. It didn't happen when Michigan lost to OSU a few years ago, and Florida had a loss that year. I'm not an expert on voters though.

If this game is close, I bet the pollsters won't drop the loser of this game too far down the ranks. I wouldn't be shocked if there was a rematch if Texas falters.

That's absolutely wrong, but that's the way it is.

The problem is the first deserving team after Texas this year would be a mid-major. We'll see how responsive the pollsters are to that.

And IMO, that's the big part of it. The computers have Cincy at 3rd as of this last week's rankings, even though TCU was ahead overall. Add the fact that Cincy played later than TCU, as well as the fact that the computers don't consider margin of victory, and who knows.

ETA: what I mean by "big part" is the pollsters' aspect.

Agreed. While I don't see it as incredibly likely (I'd give both Cincy and TCU better odds than the loser) there is a definite path to a rematch here.

The key is to stay ahead of Cincy in the polls and ahead of TCU in the computer rankings. Then if enough voters are split on which one of TCU or Cincy is better, then there is a possibility the loser of the title game could sneak in there. But it would be really hard because a few writers might drop the loser behind Boise which would really hurt the overall average. But a few writers/coaches (probably southern ones) who left them 1/2 might counterbalance that.

Looking at Colley's computer rankings which allows you to play around with scenarios, his rankings for this week are Alabama, Florida, Texas, Cincy, TCU, Boise, Oregon.

I put in a Cincy win, Alabama win, Nebraska win, Oregon win, and Boise win this week and got this:

Alabama, Cincy, Florida, Texas, TCU, Oregon, Boise.

There could also definitely be some voting shenanigans going on. Boise might suddenly move ahead of Cincy/TCU on some ballots. It's hard to say what will happen.

Then what does TCU need? A Texas loss alone? Texas loss coupled with an SEC blowout?

TCU needs a Texas loss, an SEC blowout, and hope that Cincy doesn't jump them with today's win (which they probably will).

Basically, TCU needs 4 fewer undefeated teams than there are.

If Texas loses I think TCU would move to #2 with the loser of the SEC game being #3 in the human polls. That would actually give TCU more of a margin than they have right now. Cinci is already 2 spots ahead of TCU in the Computer Polls so they won't gain any ground on TCU there. If Texas loses I think TCU goes to the Title Game, and rightfully so.

edit: TCU is actually likely to increase their lead on Cinci just because they will gain 1 spot on them in the computer polls and Cinci is not going to gain any ground on TCU in the human polls.

is verne lundquist incapable of excitement? Ingram rumbles 69 yards and he never raises his voice. He acts like it's an 8-yard run.

riley cooper on a 50-yard catch and run and you'd think lundquist was describing an xbox live tourney.

earlier when Florida's James reversed field on the punt and had open field, only to have a TD erased by a great tackle by the Punter, ole Verne was basically yawning during it.

Basically, I hate him

It's only #1 vs. #2. It's not like it's the Masters or anything.

The most excitement I've heard from him came when Tebow's head came near a helmeted Florida player. It didn't even touch, but Verne cackled about Tebow head-butting without a helmet.

He's so old, Tebow's probably the only player on the field he can recognize. I'm convinced Lundquist only likes Tebow because he has the same haircut his military father had when he beat him with a belt back in the 1920s.
